She was staring at the clear night sky as she sat in the sand with her chin on her knees. The stars were blurry because of the tears in her eyes. She didn't bother wiping them because she couldn't stop the waterfalls.
She sat there for what seemed an eternity. It felt like every nerve in her body shut down. It felt like she was numb. It felt like she had a gaping black hole where her heart used to be.
Her friends sat on a bench a little further, watching the happiness flow out of her into the ocean, maybe lost forever. As they looked at her it seemed like she would never be happy again, hoping it was a bad nightmare. Pinching wouldn't work because this was realiy. The stars faded, making place for the sunlight to shine across the ocean onto their faces. She had fallen asleep.
Tyler picked her up from the sand and carried her to the beach house and laid her down on his bed and watched her sleep. It was weird seeing her like that, peacefully sleeping but with her eyes still swollen from crying. He couldn't handle it seeing her like that, like he could feel her pain too.
Florence, Hayley and Chris were sipping their coffees in the living room. They were watching the news as Tyler came in. They showed images they had seen with their own eyes, images they would never be able to erase from their memories.
Tyler thought of Lia's scream as it pierced in their ears, a sound of desperate fear and horror. That very moment, she screamed her soul out. It was the most horrible thing they ever heard. Florence shut down the TV. She had tears in her eyes again, so did Hayley.
"What do we do now?" Chris stood up and looked at all of them.
"I guess we try our hardest to be there for Lia, she will need us", Hayley said.
Florence walked to the window and stared outside. She turned around and said: "But have you seen her? When she screamed at that moment, when she was crying her eyes out, it seemed like she would never be happy again. It was like a part of her died together with him."
