My imaginary girlfriend (Part-6)

A Mystery unfolds

I had to drop one year, and became regular in college. My juniors, or rather my classmates were nice to me, perhaps because they knew what had happened - fake sympathy. I too heard stories about it but never felt like asking anyone.

I was sitting in the canteen and Harish took a side opposite mine. I wondered why he did that, because we were never in good terms while in the same class.

Harish: Hi, how are you?

Me: Fine.

Harish: You remember me right?

Me: Ofcourse.

Harish: Rick, I am sorry for what I told you that day.

Me: Which day? What did you say?

Harish: Wait, you dont remember?

Me: No.

Harish: You dont remember what happened in the trip?

Me: I hear people telling about a trip or something where I had an accident, but seriously I dont remember anything.

Harish: Okay, but let me tell you I really didn't mean anything serious back then and once again,I am sorry. Take care Rick, goodbye.

I had no clue about what he was talking, infact I was least interested.

Later that day, the police officer came to visit me.

Police: How are you Rick?

Me: Fine.

Police: Do you remember anything yet.

Me:No, I still dont.

Police: What is the last memory you have before getting up from coma?

This question was difficult to answer, I obviously could not mention about the days that I had spent with her, and most of all, I did not care about what life I had before her.

Me: I cannot exactly remember.

Police: I am well aware of your medical condition and so I am not going to pressurize you. These are the few things that we found at the spot of accident, see if you can remember these.

He handed over to me a handbag with a diary in it.

Me: Sorry, I cannot recognise.

Police: Its okay, keep it. Perhaps it is yours, because no other body was found at the spot. Most probably you fell down from the edge of a cliff and luckily got trapped in between the branches of a tree from where our team rescued you, but could not find anyone else.

Me: What if someone was there with me?

Police: Our team had went deeper into that jungle and searched for about three days but couldn't find anyone and because you don't remember anything that makes it difficult for us. Anyway I got to leave now, if you remember anything just call me and i will be here.

It was 3 a.m. I stayed awake all this while, thinking about all that had happened, her sudden arrival, turning of my life with an unexpected twist. I was more interested in those days that were meant to be illusions than the reality that had happened with me.

The window was open and all of a sudden the wind blew in.

"Might be a storm or something." - I thought.

The neglected diary kept on my table automatically turned pages and stopped at a particular page, the wind became mild by then. It was as if just to draw my attention. As I read the lines, a shiver ran down my spine, it bore the exact verse

"Let me be the illusion

Let me remain a mystery

The less you try to know me

The easier it is for you"
