A PIECE OF ADVICE

I was the youngest in my family .Being the youngest, I was always on the receiving end of all the lecturing and advice. Being preached all my life, I pounced upon the opportunity when my cousins were born. I continued the tradition by pouring every bit of advice I had to my little sisters.

Being twins they always had to share. I constantly told them how important it was to share. But how much advice they really took in I never really got to know

One sunny Sunday afternoon, I was watching TV with my 6 year old cousin, when my grandmother walked in .She gave us 10 rupees and asked us to buy whatever we fancied . We both loved the chocolate ‘5 star’ and the money was just enough for the both of us. My sister held my hand and impatiently tugged me to take her to the shop. Just as we reached the gate to leave, we remembered her twin who was studying away for the dictation to be held in her school the next day .My grandmother was watering the plants outside. We both wanted a 5 star but we also HAD to buy my other sister something.

“Ajii, give us another 5 rupees .We both want a 5 star, but we also have to get one for Belli” Chukki asked.

“Aiyooo!” my grandmother whined. “It’s ok! Why don’t you just buy two 5 stars .Your sister is upstairs, and she won’t get to know” my grandmother simply said.

“That’s right Chukki, she doesn’t have to know. It’s all right come on now”. I said, but little did I realize that I was going back on my own words.

She insisted on taking another 5 rupees, but I dragged her away. Just as we reached the shop I met a friend and started talking to her. Being just a foot-throw distance away I asked Chukki to go buy the chocolates. Two minutes later, Chukki came to me with a 3 lollipops and a éclairs .I WAS SUPRPISED.

“Akka! Now we can give a lollipop to Belli also.”She said with a twinkle in the eye. “Here, this éclair is for you because you are the oldest.”She said with a heart-warming smile.

“Aww, that’s so sweet. Very good Chukki, I am so proud of you. You definitely did the right thing.” I said half through I very tight hug.

“Here…”and I popped the éclairs into her mouth and told her that she had done a very noble and impressive thing.

That day I prayed in hope that the innocence of this young girl would never be lost. She couldn’t spell ethics but definitely had hers intact. I immediately felt ashamed of myself. I constantly preached my sister about the importance of sharing. But I realized that I had a lot to learn from her .I was overcomes by the greed to buy a 5 star that I forgot about my other sister who was practicing her spellings at home.

SO I decided “to walk the talk”, in hope that they would admire me they way I have today and in the process make me a better human .

So my dearest wonderful sister .I love you immensely and wish you to stay the way you are.
