Post-wedding Rituals In Hindu Wedding

Info

Weddings in India are the most elaborate affairs you will ever find. The pre-wedding rituals, the post-wedding rituals and the wedding itself last for about a month. I think that is exactly what makes India unique that everything is celebrated lavishly and all these rituals are a means of coming together. Though they all have a deep meaning behind them, wedding rituals are part of weddings for a purpose. One major reason being protecting the bride and groom from all evil and taking the blessings of the lord almighty so that the wedding takes place hassle-free.

While the wedding along with its rituals is so grand and elaborate, so are the post wedding rituals. Let’s take a look at them one by one and see what their significance is.

Vidaai- the final conclusion of the wedding takes place through this ceremony. Vidai is the ceremony in which the family members bid farewell to the bride as she leaves for the groom’s house to start a new journey of life. The bride along with her family members get nostalgic at their daughter’s departure.

Grah Pravesh- in India, bride is considered as goddess Lakshmi and she steps into the house for the first time amidst all the rituals. She has to drop a pot filled with rice with her right foot and enter the house. At this juncture, the sisters of the bride-groom demand a gift to let them enter the house. Only then they are allowed to enter the house.

Mooh Dikhayi- This is the ceremony held once both the bride and groom reach the groom’s house. This is the very first ritual that takes place to introduce the bride to the family members when they give the bride a gift for showing them her face for the first time.

Wedding Reception- This is one of the grand post-wedding rituals that takes place where the bride and the groom are introduced with the guests and other relatives who could not attend the wedding. It may either be held the next day of the wedding or may be held on the following Sunday soon after the wedding takes place. At times, if the wedding takes place simply not involving many guests, then this is the only grand event that is mentioned on the wedding cards.

Pag Phera- This is the first time the bride returns her house with her husband after her wedding. At this time the groom meets the family members and is the time bride returns to her place after marriage.
