What to Do When QuickBooks Desktop Won’t Open

Method 1 - Give a New Name to the QBWUSER.INI File

1. Press and hold the Windows key + E on your keyboard to open the File Explorer screen.

2. Move to the Organize tab on the top of your screen.

3. Tap on “Folder and Search option.”

4. Now, go to the View tab in this window and scroll down to the Advanced Settings section.

5. Select the “Show hidden files, folders and drive” option.

6. Tap on the OK button.

7. After this, move to the search bar of this screen on the top of the window.

8. Paste this location there and hit the Enter key- My Computer>> C: Drive >> Documents>> [Your User name]>> Local Settings>> Application Data>> Intuit>> QuickBooks[Year].

9. Look for the QBWUSER.INI file.

10. Right-click on it and choose to Rename.

11. Add .OLD to the name of the file so that it looks like QBWUSER.INI.OLD.

12. The next time you open QuickBooks, a fresh QBWUSER.INI file will be created and accessed automatically.

Method 2 - Switch the Location of the QuickBooks files

1. Navigate to the folder that holds your QuickBooks files.

2. Look for your company file. It should have an extension of .QBW.

3. Once you locate the file, click right on it and tap on Copy.

4. Go to your desktop screen.

5. Right-click here and select Paste.

6. After this, open QuickBooks.

7. Press the File tab and choose the “Company Restore” option.

8. When you browse the company file, select the file you just pasted on the desktop.

9. Once the activity is successful, you can move the file back to its original location.
