Do we have the #RightToChoose?
Think hard for a moment and then tell me, “Do you really think we have the #RightToChoose?”
If you think that we don’t, Welcome aboard!
However, if you believe that we have this Right, then this might go as a disclaimer for you.
“This article is based on facts and truths. Resemblance to anything fictitious is purely coincidental and not at all intentional. Kindly read only if you want the non-existent world that you live in, to shatter into pieces.”
India is the most populous democracy in the world and its Constitution ensures the Indian Citizens of justice, equality and liberty. Liberty means freedom.
According to the Indian Constitution, we have the right to freedom of choice of religion, right to equality, right to life, right to freedom of speech and expression and to practice any profession.
I wouldn't dare to repeat the same!
They say that we have the #RightToChoose a religion, that, it doesn't matter if we’re a Hindu or a Muslim or a Sikh or a Christian. Then, why is it that even today, people are judged on the basis of their religion? Why is it that an individual and his actions are assumed to represent the entire community and its beliefs?
They say that we are free to practice any profession. Why, then, is India full of innumerable engineers and doctors but its singers, sportsmen, artists and writers can be counted on fingertips? Why don’t we see individuals chasing and following their dreams instead of submitting to the society's and others’ demands?
They say that we have the Right to freedom of speech and expressions. Then why is it that we’re afraid of admitting our dreams, our plans for future, our hopes and our aspirations even in front of our loved ones? Why is it that we’re quietly watching others take the driving seat of our lives while we become the mute spectators?
Had we had the Right to Freedom of Choice of Religion, it would have been nobody’s business whether a person is Hindu or Muslim or of any other religion. It would have been the individual’s choice and nobody else would have had the damn Right to question or judge it.
If we had the Right to practice any profession, no one would have become a “Doctor” just because everybody else in his family was of the same profession. He would not have become an “Engineer” because his parents wanted him to be one. It would have been his passion towards anything which would have made him choose it as his career.
Had we had the Right to freedom of speech and expressions, it would not have been difficult for a child to tell his parents that he has a friend out of their religion, that he does not want to be a doctor but rather wants to pursue sports. He would not have shied away from saying that although he loves and respects his family but ultimately it’s HIS life which is at stake.
“I am a Hindu/Muslim/Sikh/Christian. There’s nothing that I can do about it. There’s nothing that I want to do about it. Nobody can represent my entire community, neither do I. I am I. All I can ask of you is 'No Judgement on the basis of whatsoever criterion',” says a victim of religion based discrimination.
“I have so many dreams to fulfill in this single lifetime. I want to be a singer/writer/engineer/doctor/cricketer/tabla player/fashion designer/entrepreneur. What I ask of you is to let my passion decide what I want to do for the rest of my life rather than imposing your decisions and wishes upon me,” says the survivor of 'society induced' career choices.
“I am a human being. I am a social animal. I’m bound to have parents, family, friends, colleagues etc. I cannot share all my feelings with everyone. But I have my parents, some close friends, some loved ones with whom I can.. with whom I SHOULD be able to share my thoughts so that I don’t become a potential bomb with my feelings all bottled up," says the average human being.
God has given you a brain.
Our Indian Constitution has given you some valuable Rights.
Use them well !!
