Silence

Silence, that's all I shared with her, as we sat under the darkness. The stars hidden behind the glare of all the lights from the town across the river. Music from one loud speaker ruined the rhythm from the other. One could nearly make out the faint unanimous shout of new year, but I didn't care about it all...

The river below us gently flowed, setting a soothing ambience, and amidst the light drizzle in the freezing conditions, I could only feel the warmth of her hand below my palm. I looked at her, her hair flying in the light breeze, drops of rain collected on her face, faintly visible in the light from the distant street light, but she made no effort to either manage her hair, or wipe her face. She kept looking straight, at the light from the town. Her eyes sparkled from the raindrops, or were they tears? I didn't want to know. I didn't even want to breathe too hard lest I should disturb the moment. I just smiled and started looking the same way she looked on.

A few moments later, I could hear my friend shout my name, "ID! We had been looking all over for you man! What are you doing here sitting alone?" I didn't have an answer. I just said, "just felt like it..."

As we waded through the snow covered road to our hotel, all I could feel was the warmth of her hand on my palms, and the cold raindrops on my face. As I turned back to see where I had been, drops of warm water ran down my cheek...
