It's been a month since then. Nothing has actually changed past that day but still everyone was learning to adapt.
There's a strange thing about death. Until it strangles one of your loved ones, you will never really understand the gravity of the loss.
Meera would always advocate for the 'wrong' and 'right' she had in her mind-----well demarcated. But this time, she chose not to speak nor think. The 'loss' she was trying to discern was the untimely demise of her sister. Just the previous night before the ill-fated day, she had thought to herself that she would call up her sister and mentor her on things she had picked up on the journey. But later the thoughts subdued with the justification that separation was merely a month apart. She had planned elaborately that this time she visits her village, she would gather all the kids of the neighborhood and preach the things she practiced in her life. She wanted to impart with them the knowledge and wisdom of her 28 mortal years.
Fifteen mortal years....That's exactly the time her sister got to spend among the near and dear ones. She gulped down carbolic acid (usually kept in thatched roofs to keep aloof snakes). The 10th board results were declared. Unsatisfied, she chose 'death' the next day.
"When people leave... do they leave behind holes in the corners of the heart they had occupied?" ...Meera had read it somewhere and had always wondered if it was true. She found it hard to speak to her uncle and auntie who now were afloat in the ocean of endless grief. They felt empty from within. They didn't shed tears. But they didn't speak either.
She could never encompass the grief they were experiencing. And she chose to remain silent.
The loss left behind its legacy in the form of hollow eyes, melancholic hearts and souls devoid of hope. Nonetheless, everyone around them were trying their very best to uplift their spirits. But efforts weren't enough. 'Time' is the only answer and solace to their emptiness.
It took few days for the reality to seep into her. Meera could clearly see the vulnerability of life. Indeed the so-called purpose and goals that we attach ourselves to....are fragile and meaningless. It is only 'compassion' that stands the test of time.
Life given to us is the mercy of the Supreme Soul. And self-inflicted death can never be a choice ...can never be a way to end miseries, defeat or any hurdles.
