The Early Days of the Hammock
The hammock has its origin in South and Central America. The native inhabitants of these regions developed this tool to enable them to have a better sleep. The first versions of hammocks were made from the barks of the hammock tree. This would then be replaced by sisal fibers which proved to be more abundant. They became a popular thing as they adequately provided safety from ailment transmission, animal bites and insect stings. The suspended nature also provided protection from biting ants, snakes and other harmful organisms. The first hammocks to land in Europe were brought by Christopher Columbus in 1492. He came to Spain with several hammocks from Islands that are now the Bahamas.
In the early days, hammocks would be used by sailors to get comfortable sleep instead of lying down on wet, dirty decks. Hammocks also helped in the maximization of space in the ships. On the other hand, soldiers and explorers used these unique tools when passing by wooded regions. The early 1900s saw parents use hammocks to keep an eye on kids that were learning how to crawl.
The Evolution
Over time, the hammock would evolve to give consumers more comfort. However, while manufacturers have been able to come up with different types of hammocks, the basis of a sheet of material with ropes has always remained the same. The hammock has also evolved to being used with the readily available hammock stands especially in locations that do not have two points to attach typically. As such, you can readily have a hammock or hanging chair indoors whereby you can relax as you read a book or listen to music. Currently, these tools come in different sizes, shapes, and colors. They are as a result used for leisure and comfort in different settings. For instance, they are ideal when camping, for resting in the garden or by the pool.
