Samar's father's biggest worry was ,his son was denied the priviledge to speak.
He was born mute.He blamed his wife for giving birth to Samar.Sushila was tired of scientifically explaining him
and her Mother-in-law,that she had no fault, this is just "luck",it could happen to anybody, anytime.
Ramesh's mother was an impossible person. Her morning used to start with humiliating Sushila,
for neglecting her household, and going to her theatre rehearsals ,and it ended with blaming Ramesh
for marrying a "Nautaanki-baaz". Sushila purposefully told her Director,Ravin,to give her emotionally
charged scenes,it was her only route of escape. She was the perfect "Sitaa",an impeccable "Saati",a
flawless "Savitri".She had a huge fan following, they praised her beauty, which was unnatural
for a theatre actress, but they were literally stunned by her dialogue delivery, her voice had in it
on one hand the murmurs of a mountain spring and on the other, hard sounding waves of a turbulent
sea.
Samar was very fond of his mother ,She was his oxygen. He was nine, when Ramesh charged her of
infidelity. He remembered his father slapping his mother,he remembered him torturing her for hours by
dropping on her hot molten wax.She bore the pain without speaking a word,Samar wanted to shout
in frustration, wanted to raise his voice, but could only silently weep.
Years later, one night,he saw his mother kissing a photo-graph and crying (and could not hear her
saying," Day by Day,his tortures are getting worse,I wonder how did I once fall in love with him,
but assuredly Ravinji, this was not the Ramesh of Sushila.Life has drastically changed post-marriage.
Ramesh has changed.
I had told him very much, that I can not leave doing theatre after marriage,he told it was okay with him,
then why did he never raise his voice against Ammaji's allegations of mine neglecting family life?
Today I fearlessly admit I love you, even knowing I am not supposed to get involved in an extra-marital
relation, but when he charged me of infidelity ,he even said Samar is your child,He can not be a father
of a "defective piece".
I was not at all attracted to you,you were my Director,my
teacher,my Sir,whom I ardently respected,he misinterpreted my respect for you as romantic attraction
and called me a cheater. He made me hate him,he made me go away from him,I was love-starved,I
needed a shoulder to put my sobbing head, you gradually became that shoulder for me,and yes today
Ramesh is right,I no more love him,I love you...but was not his doubts on my character the driving force
behind my breaking the promises we made to be together forever?
I know you have a wife, you can never leave her,you don't even know my love for you,but you are
the man, whose love has strengthened me,today I raise my voice ,whenever he abuses me,I even threat
him,I would file a case of Domestic Violence...He no more beats me.I just want a Divorce,
not to be with you,but to be away from him.Nobody is supporting me,not even my parents, all say I am
a "loose-character",if they prove ,I have committed adultery ,I would not get alimony,I want it for Samar,
I know Ramesh would not give him a single penny,He is twenty only, has not yet completed his
education,Fine Arts is not that cheap to pursue...."
Samar could understand his mother completely,he felt he has remained quiet for enough. If he keep on
maintaining his silence, what would be the difference between him and those people who are blessed
with a voice.
He wanted to say,how pure his mother was, like River Ganges or the roles, she had played. But
what could he do to make people realise her holiness?
