What's up with Whatsapp?

“Do you use Whatsapp?”

This is the most common way of asking for a person’s mobile number nowadays.

“Whatsapp me once you reach.”

“Check the ‘last seen’ on Whatsapp.”

“Send the photos on Whatsapp.”

“This song is really nice. Whatsapp me the song.”

“Let’s voice chat on Whatsapp.”

Whatsapp, Whatsapp everywhere. What is this Whatsapp?

Whatsapp Messenger is a proprietary, cross-platform instant messaging subscription service for smartphones with Internet access founded in 2009 by Brian Acton and Jan Koum . In addition to text messaging, users can send each other images, video, and audio media messages.

It is considered shameful if one person tells another that he/she does not use Whatsapp in spite of having a smartphone.

How has this ‘boon’ to the present generation affected us?

No longer can the service provider steal money from the users during festival days. (He still thinks that we will text when there is Whatsapp? O.o) (No special charge for internet during these days).

All types of media can be sent. ( Who wants to spend more money on MMS? O.o )

You can VOICE CHAT! ( But nothing can replace talking over the phone or in person. :D )

And the list is endless...

“Why am I using Whatsapp so much?”

“What made Whatsapp click?”

I , at times, ask myself these questions.

Those umpteen number of emoticons that reflect our emotions always?

Or is it the ‘instant’ connectivity? ( Of course, not when you don’t have coverage. :P)

It may be option of ‘talking’ to others at no extra cost, right?

That is up to you to decide.

Wait. Does anyone even have the time to pause ‘Whatsapping’ and think about this?

The messaging system handles more than 10 BILLION messages and more than 400 million photos are shared EACH and EVERY DAY. This is no surprise with more than 400 million ACTIVE users. And Facebook having bought Whatsapp, it is expected to only increase.

As they say, “ Too much of anything is bad”, Whatsapp has its own disadvantages.

But who wants to read negative things?

Let’s take the positives out of ‘The coolest thing on earth right now’ and enjoy.

Only to the limit? Up to you. :P

P.S. As I type this article, I received more than a hundred messages on Whatsapp. Am I addicted? Maybe.
