Narration is at the center of many games, and it’s what drives us to carry on to the next cutscene. Whether it be hero stories, villains, or relatable narratives that cut deep. There’s an endless list of story-driven games out there, and this article only begins to open the door.
Uncharted: A Thief’s End
The Uncharted franchise did an excellent task of portraying the tales of Nathan Drake, the notorious treasure hunter, and thief. His story came to a glorious end back in 2016, with the release of Uncharted: A Thief’s End. Throughout the game, players must set out on an adventure to uncover the lost pirate’s treasure. On the surface level, it sounds simple, but it does an excellent job of dealing with the theme of moving on. Recently, Tom Holland (Spiderman) brought Nathan Drake to the big screen in an incredible movie adaptation.
The landscape in this game is incredible, which is why it deserves a powerful graphics card. Fortunately, the PlayStation exclusive is set for a PC release in October 2022.

God of War
God of War is home to Kratos, the violent God determined to get revenge for the slaughtering of the Greek Pantheon of Gods. Until 2018, nobody expected the titular character to have a son. The 2018 release takes Kratos and his son on an emotive journey through the nine realms of Norse mythology, where they’re trying to lay their mother to rest.
If you enjoyed this game, you can find out where Kratos and Atreus journey next in the upcoming sequel: God of War Ragnarok, which hits the shelves on November 9th.
The Last of Us
Post-apocalyptic zombie stories have been “done to death”, which is it’s difficult to come across a truly excellent narrative. Fortunately, Naughty Dog managed to do just that through Ellie and Joel’s story in The Last of Us. Ex-father Joel sets off on an adventure to escort teenage Ellie across a zombie-ridden landscape in the hopes of finding a cure. While battling through the world, these characters form a warming bond that makes for beautiful viewing.
Arkham City
There have been countless Batman games over the years, with many studios trying to release a unique narrative. Finally, Rocksteady Studios and WB Games Montréal cracked the code with Arkham Asylum. Then, the highly anticipated sequel: Arkham City flipped the Batman narrative on its head and became one of the best Batman narratives around. Arkham City is an open-world Gotham that’s overrun with classic villains including Mr. Freeze, The Penguin, and The Joker. You’ll uncover plenty of twists and turns while playing this game, which culminates in an incredible ending.
Creative storytelling is a critical part of game design, and it’s largely what fans come back for. There’s nothing better than being drawn into a gripping game and accidentally binging it in one weekend - much like with a Netflix series. The titles discussed above are a great place to start if you’re looking to sink your teeth into a brilliant narrative.
