When first I saw you,
you were starry-eyed for
another.
When first I encountered you,
you were in company of ya father.
When first I saw your smile,
you were cringing away
with reddened cheeks,
it never was your intention
to witness my ungracious
daily tush slaps from
our boisterous, resident golden ager.
When first i saw ya teary eyes,
you had been outside - on my lawn,
your gown drenched,
your venetian mask in a trembling hand,
your head bowed,
body shaking violently.
The rains could do much,
but couldn't hide the signs
of your sorrowed heart-
a heart-broken one?
When first I realized I couldn't
live without you,
there had been a two-weeks '
wall of of silence between us.
Pride had kept it up,
but love had torn it down.
The first I saw it in ya eyes-
the stars,
I'd fought and won;
cancer couldn't do me in.
The first I carried you bridal style,
I'd braved a heroic rescue.
The crocodiles couldn't keep me down,
and death itself couldn't watch my triumphant smile.
Forever I'll cherish all our firsts,
for they had been the beginnings of possibilities for you and I.
Without them, an 'us', there might
not have been.
