"Do you have to leave?" she asked with little diamond like tears in her eyes.
"Yes," he replied; standing with his bag on his back, on the platform.
"Okay," she said, "But remember; you come back to me."
"Yes ma'am."
As the train left the station she felt as if it took a part of her away. He was going to do the toughest job; the greatest duty to his country, protecting it with his life. But little did anyone know that staying back was tougher.
Rohan and Ankita met in high school. There were no stars at first sight, none of the usual works. They became friends normally just by chance. He was the school heart-throb, famous everywhere. She on the other hand was a loner, always into books. But every night when they would talk, it was evident that no one else knew them better. They grew to become best friends and the late night talking grew into an irresistible habit. One day without a 'Hi' would make them anxious and nervous. For four years hence they stuck through thick and thin. She was like the pillar supporting him and he was the shield guarding her. But through all this time neither did anything 'more' occur to them nor did they want it. Their friendship was their sunshine and best friends was their only mark. Yes they loved each other dearly but all the sparkle and the cliques was not their thing. Rohan had a dream and it was his passion. The army was his destiny. And that fire is his eyes is what made Ankita adore him.
Now the time had come. He had to leave. Never did they imagine that it would be so hard. The battle cry had gone. But he'll come back when it was over, there was need to say goodbye. But now she was expected to go on alone? And what about him? Was he supposed to fight alone?
A year passed. One day as she was coming out of college, she looked up to see him standing at the gate. Was it a dream? She ran into his arms.
"You came back!" the little diamonds were back again.
"Always."
They spend the day together and at night they finally lost themselves in each other. Their love found ground and was consummated. A week went by in a blink and it was time to leave again.
"Hey, you come back to me," she said.
"Yes ma'am."
This time they had their kiss goodbye.
Two months later he received a letter. Not only her heart but her whole body had he conceived. Soon the guns blazed and corpses were laid.
One month later, she received a letter. He had attained his ultimate goal. Her hero had become a martyr. And this time only a coffin came back to her.
