A Chance Encounter

Going to this seemingly boring seminar was not how Violet imagined her Saturday would be like. All she wanted to do was take the day off and sleep; but no her friends had to drag her to this full day seminar. Why? Because they were falling short and it had to be a team delegation. 'Fine.' So she sucked it up and went anyway. At least it would be a nice day out with her friends she thought.

They reached way before anyone else and that was annoying because that means Violet didn't need to get up that early. Anyway they went in and sat in the auditorium and waited for it to start. She was looking forward to meeting new people though. But that wasn't really happening yet. 'There aren't even any cute guys here to stalk', she thought. The seminar began and to her surprise the lectures turned out to be far more interesting and captivating then she imagined. Especially when one of the speaker started talking about the history and essence of any subject as a matter of fact, she rejoiced. Violet sat in rapt attention as she took in every word of the speaker, as it was soaked in philosophy and rationel. The one thing she keeps searching. It reminded her of the stories her father used to tell her as a little child and she would listen to him describe the inner philosophy of the world, with large sparkling eyes. Now she was thankful to her idiot friends, who were quite literally sleeping by the way, for bringing her. She could reminisce.

Then came lunch and still no new people. She really didn't think through her social awkwardness. Being an introvert she wanted to make friends. Talk about irony.

After lunch a photography exhibition was arranged. Violet was very excited about it, probably the only feat of the day she was waiting for. The room was teeming with people lobbying and going around admiring beautiful photographs that were submitted. She had submitted one too, but it was obvious it wasn't going anywhere; regardless she was thrilled at the experience.

Then in the midst of all the bustle, she saw him and their eyes met. It was perfect timing. Violet felt a charge run down her spine which she could not explain. She looked away. Was that something? Or maybe it was just a coincidence. 'He was really cute though, and he seemed really nice.' She look over to him again. He was looking back. 'Damn what is happening?' It was like in the movies and therefore very hard to believe. Was there even anything? She wanted to go up to him and strike up a conversation but her social anxiety and awkwardness would never allow that, duh. All she knew about him was that he belonged to the organising institution, which was evident because they were all wearing the same featuring t-shirt. But that knowledge wasn't enough for her! Anyway, they kept looking at each other and it was obvious to both of them that that was happening. And yet no one did anything about it. She wanted him to come up to her and just say 'hi' maybe. But why would that even happen, no one does that now. She was being absurd.

So that chance went by staring both of them in the face and neither did anything. Back at the auditorium everyone was asked to settle down for the closing speech of the day. Violet was sitting with her friends and gossiping as there was clearly nothing else to look forward to.

Then out of nowhere a second chance was thrown at Violet. Who gets second chances? Especially when it comes to something like this. Have you ever had a second chance to meet or say hi to a cute guy you were checking out on a bus or something? This never happens! But this time it seemed like fate was on her side for a change. He came and sat next to her.  She must have stared at him for two minutes in incredulity. But fortunately he didn't notice, he was looking up front. Now Violet was elevated and she shrieked to her friends, 'that's the guy!' But being the idiot she is, nothing came out of her. Thankfully this time he was a bit more confident. He smiled at her asked which college she came from and this gave Violet the courage to ask what his academia was. 'Physics.' Ah of course! Had to be the subject that composes the universe. No wonder she was drawn to him, owing to her sapiosexuality. She could literally feel the puzzle peices fitting together perfectly; without even knowing anything else! But in spite of getting such a ridiculously obvious second chance, neither of them asked the others name. Yeah talk about lost opportunities.

While going back home Violet regretted for not being a little more friendly. She played the entire incident in her head over and over again and thought about what she should have or could have said or done. Ah well nothing could be done now. It was a chance encounter and "fate" was left to what it could have been.
