Mucus(Balgham ki wajohat) is a gelatinous substance secreted by the nasal cells. This substance is formed when bacteria and other organisms travel up the respiratory tract, through the bronchi and bronchioles to the lungs. Mucus, a gelatinous fluid, protects the cells against infection and protects mucosal lining from damage. Mucus is primarily produced in response to irritants such as dust mites, pollen, and air pollution. However, it may also be produced by the body in response to a number of different conditions such as colds, flu, sinusitis, allergies, and infections.
When mucus (Balgham ki wajohat) is produced too much, the result can be clogged nasal passages that can lead to sore throats, coughs, and difficulty breathing. Additionally, excess mucus may also be an indication of a more serious condition such as a sinus infection or polyps. When the mucus is produced too little however, it may lead to a runny nose, a clear sign of a cold or allergies, and can also signal the start of nasal irrigation therapy. Here are several of the most common conditions that can cause the production of excess mucus and what type of remedy would be best for these conditions:
- Chronic rhino sinusitis - this is an inflamed and chronically infected sinus that causes thickening and increased mucus(Balgham ki wajohat) production. The condition usually affects people over the age of fifty. A chronic condition such as this may require regular medications such as steroid nasal sprays. However, there are also natural home remedies that can help relieve the discomfort and symptoms associated with chronic sinusitis. Herbal teas may also be effective in reducing congestion.
- Allergic rhinitis - this is the most common acute allergic reaction to airborne irritants such as pollens, mold, and dust mites. This type of condition commonly affects children and pregnant women. It is characterized by sneezing, itchy eyes, and coughing. Most often, it is caused by increased exposure to irritants found in the air. Natural home remedies that address the allergens in the air and provide relief from allergic rhinitis have been proven to be very effective in treating and easing chronic sinusitis symptoms.
- Allergic rhinitis is not the only condition that requires the use of nasal irrigation therapy. An irritated nose can also be caused by post-nasal drip, which is a persistent flow of mucus from the nasal cavities into the throat. This condition should be addressed with a saline nasal spray. In addition, chronic sinusitis and postnasal drip can also be helped with the use of Echinacea.
- Asthma - this condition is characterized by inflammation and difficulty in breathing. It can be caused by a number of factors including fungi, molds, pollen, and air pollution. The inflammation of the airways may be due to anything that causes a change in the pH level of the air. For example, pollution in the air may make the mucus more acidic or alkaline. A good example of this would be cigarette smoke.
- Mucus thickening - this is another common ailment that can affect those with sinus problems. Mucus(Balgham ki wajohat) thickeners can come in the form of a cream or an oral antihistamine medication. Some people are allergic to certain foods or drinks, which can also cause them to become mucus thickened. It is common for mucus to become thickened after eating or drinking something that may cause some sort of irritation or inflammation. A good example of this would be postnasal drip.
- Sinus problems can negatively affect a person's health. When mucus(Balghami khansi ka ilaj) gets in the way of the sinuses, it can increase the congestion and lead to difficulty breathing. One of the best herbal treatments for mucus is to drink warm liquids like water. Drinking herbal teas can also help to relieve the mucus from the nasal passages. Other herbs that can be used as a nasal irrigation include peppermint, eucalyptus, and Rosemary.
