Blue Notes

Info

The loud ring of an alarm wakes a young woman up from her slumber.

"Ugh..." She slams her fist on the alarm clock and the alarm stops.

She groans and sighs as she gets off the soft and warm bed, but then her eyes fall onto her mini bulletin board lit by her caramel lava lamp. She saw what looked like a yellow pad pinned onto its corky exterior.

"Awww." She smiled from cheek to cheek.

Happy Birthday, said the ruefully drawn cat with a minigun.

Then suddenly she was startled by this boy who poked a little toy gun out towards her from nowhere and then he shoots up to the ceiling. Confetti was everywhere.

The lights turned on and blinded her, then she found her mom and her brother greeting her with a loud "Happy Birthday, Isabel!"

"Awww, Mom! Justin! Come here!" She ran to the middle of the room with her hands wide open.

Her mother hugged her right away while Justin jumped up at the back.

"How the hell could we forget, hun?" her mother patted her back.

"How did you get in my room?" Isabel then slowly turned to see Justin tip-toeing out.

"I don't know..." Justin slowly crept out the room, and then running away from a chuckling Isabel chasing him.

"What am I gonna do with these kids?" Then their mother closes Isabel's door.

Minutes later, Isabel is in the bathroom.

In the shower she feels warm water trickle down he toes as she leans on the wall. She saw her fading reflection on the glass divider. Who knew this blonde, freckled and diamond faced girl had such a tight family? She stared into her blue eyes fro a moment.

"Breakfast is ready, Isabel! It's your favorite!" Her mother screamed.

"Pancakes?!" She asked loud enough.

"Yes!" The mother replied.

"I'm eating already!" Justin shouted and then she heard a squeak.

"I can hear your rubber ducky, Justin."

"Aawww"

Then it was time for breakfast.

"Justin, You never ate pancakes that fast."

"MUST... *munch* CHAT... *swallow* WITH FRIEND"

"Isn't this that girl..."

"No."

Isabel nudges Justin. His eyes go wide.

"No, I promise!"

"Then who is it?"

He then rolls his eyes and eats faster. So, she just chuckles.

After the meal, Isabel takes her bag out and walks to the door.

"Hun, Where are you going?" Her mother stops at the sight of her leaving, holding a basket of laundry.

"To the Library, I got to return some books." She pats her bag.

"You're forgetting something..." her mother said with a smug look on her face.

Isabel kisses her cheek. "Bye, Mooom."

She runs out to the sidewalk and walks a few blocks to the left and stops. "Isa!" A guy is running towards her from a block ahead as soon as he saw her.

"Sonny, What's up?"

"Oh nothing..." He gave this smug smile, shaking his face to bounce his hair around. "Just wanted to greet our birthday girl."

"Oh, really? Just?"

"Ahaha, you got me." He gives her a book.

"Oh My Gosh! Sonny!" She jumps around.

"Last book of that trilogy you kept on talking about. It was Blue Notes, right?"

She hugs him and kisses him on the cheeks which turn bright red.

"Ever wondered why I loved the book?" Isabel drew back with a smile.

"Um... If you're going to the library then I'd totally be down for you telling me on the way."

"Oh, yeah. Sure."

The town was brightened by the sun but it was so blinding because of the pine tree shades in the park they walked by. She turned to Sonny and then saw this look on his face.

"Oh, right! Blue Notes."

This made him chuckle.

"The girl, The protagonist, she mirrors me. She was bullied and stuff."

"What? Really? Guess I should read it sometime."

"Oh, Sonny. It's not like you don't know me."

"Oh, Isabel. Maybe i just want to know so much more about you."

She gives him this smile. He then sighs and says,

"Come on, you know I'm serious."

"But... Your mother..."

"Forget she ever said anything about you. Forget she made you swear to your breath not to ruin my life. She can't make me lose any appreciation for all you are."

"... I love you, Sonny. But, your mother is right."

They kept on walking but the silence almost makes the shade seem colder. The cars that passed seemed like nothing.

"Um... Sonny?"

"Yeah, No sweat. I'm sorry for um... being all touchy-feely."

"I like my guys sensitive."

He stiffles a giggle and burst out with her.

They talked about a lot of things in the library, enough for the librarian to glare at them for what felt like a century. They had a lot of fun but behind that mild looking front was a hurricane of emotions.

He drops her off to her house.

"It was nice being with you..."

"It's always a party with me around."

He laughs but she can hear some crack.

"... I love you," she decides to say. She did. It was loud and clear.

And then he beamed up.

"I love you too, Isa. See you next time."

"Yeah..."

He drives off. Until she couldn't see any trace of him, she sighs. So, she opens the door to see her Dad who was already waiting.

"Happy Birthday Bel!'

"Dad!"

She hugs him tight but sighs again.

"What's wrong, honey?"

"Oh nothing, It just feels good to hug you that's all," she said, hiding what she felt for Sonny.

She enjoyed so much in the afternoon, talking with her cousins and actually witnessing her brother spill soup all over himself from not drinking so carefully. She laughed, yes. It was a happy birthday, really... but She thought about Sonny.

Her cousins get picked up one by one. Until, It's just her and Justin in the room.

"Sis? What is love?"

"Justin?!"

"Yeah, yeah. Go on ask all you want."

"Who is it? Who do you like? What was that this morning?"

"It's Jeremy. You know? Sonny's little brother..."

Isabel was silent with a wide open mouth. She could've busted out screaming but then...

"Don't tell mom and especially dad."

"Well, okay..."

"You still haven't answered my question..."

"Oh, okay. Well, love is when you decide to break all boundaries for that person."

"I'd break any rule to run-off and play games with Jeremy any day..."

"I'd break my principle just to hold Sonny in my arms..."

"Um... Just don't tell anyone."

"Totally, Justin! Trust me!"

That night she went to her room and she laid on her bed where she laid her bag down. It was so fun she hadn't realized the bag was still on her the whole time until she was here.

She looks up to the ceiling. There from the yellow bulb was something hanging by a tread. It was a blue note.

"Wh-what?!"

She took the book from her bag.

Blue Notes: The Girl
by Emmett Thorne

"Emily, Errands and an Enamored Anonymous"

She began reading it slowly but surely.

'Emily decided she's go to a little town. Her friend had given her a little mission...'

She continued reading. The town was no other than the one Isabel stayed in. Emily went in a small house where a woman was preparing a birthday party. Emily saw a boy smiling while chatting on his phone. Emily placed a blue note from a light bulb. The pages after that were empty.

Isabel jumped off the bed and snatched the blue note.

Dear Isabel,
It's Emily. I know how much you care about my story as much as it is similar to yours. And? Yes, I did get bullied by some kids and I may have forgotten about this boy who gave me this charm that would let no one bully me anymore. I heard you did too...
I saw it here in your room, you know. Almost thought you might be me. That boy who gave you that charm told me to write this note. He wanted you to peek out the balcony tonight.
Sincerely, Emily

Isabel hurried to the balcony to see Sonny already there.

"... You're Emmett Thorne."

"In the flesh..."

He walked up to her and gave her a blue note.

prom?

Isabel laughed.

"This must be the most ambitious promposal in town."

"That's an understatement and you know it."

"You're lucky I'm saying yes, even if you didn't finish the book."

"It was a draft. Sorry."

"Promise me, you'll finish it."

"Totally."

They share a hug and kiss each other goodbye for the night.

Isabel stares down where Sonny softly drifts away climbing down the ladder he brought just for this to happen. Just when Sonny was about to turn and run off...

"Hey."

"Isa?"

"Why were Emily's eyes black?"

"She put the color into the notes like how you wrote all your sadness on your notebook pages."

"Sonny... God knows how many years I asked myself 'Who knew that?' and It was you all along..."

"Isabel."

"Someday... I promise you. We will be together forever."

"You guys are so cheesy!!!"

Sonny widens his eyes. Justin was screaming from his room.

"Guess I should go." Sonny starts running.

"JUSTIN!"
