There are three main forms of circulation in the cardiovascular system: pulmonary circulation, coronary circulation, and systemic circulation. The pulmonary circulation (lungs) refers to the pathway that blood passes through the lungs in which blood cells are infected with oxygen. Coronary circulation (heart) refers to the movement of blood through the heart tissue. Systemic circulation (the rest of the body) carries blood throughout the body to provide essential nutrients and oxygen to all cells in your body. The blood also passes through parts of the digestive system where it receives essential nutrients and minerals.
Oxygen-rich blood enters the blood vessels through the aorta, the main artery of the heart. The contraction of the left ventricle of the heart forces blood into the aorta which subsequently branches into several small arteries and is distributed throughout the body. The inner layer of the artery is very smooth, allowing blood to drain quickly, while the outer layer of the artery is very strong, allowing blood to flow forcefully. The oxygen-rich blood then enters the capillaries where oxygen and nutrients are released. Waste products are collected and the waste-containing blood flows into the veins so that it goes back to the heart where the pulmonary circulation will allow the exchange of gases in the lungs
