We are often led to believe today that we pamper our pets too much, showering them with attention and affection, as well as spending a huge amount on them in terms of treats, grooming sessions and toys. Indeed, today you can purchase pet foods that cater for all manner of intolerances and ailments. It’s often said that pet owners will actually go without something themselves in favor of their furry friends!
However, we’d be very wrong to think of our current love of our pets as purely a modern phenomena. Here’s some key facts regarding our relationship with animals and how far back they date:
Dogs
Domestic dogs can be traced back at least 12,000 years, with the discovery of the remains of a human skeleton holding a puppy in its arms. Clear evidence of the significance of animals going back countless generations.
Cats
Cats were considered sacred to the ancient Egyptians 5,000 years ago, proved by the recovery of statues and paintings. Today we often remark how highly cats seem to regard themselves… Perhaps their collective memory is recalling how they were worshiped in the era of the ancient Egyptians!
Fish
In Mesopotamia, the Sumerians raised fish in ponds dating back some 4,500 years ago, and whilst it was thought likely they were used as a food source, many cultures since have kept them for the sheer pleasure of doing so. In fact, there’s documented evidence from Roman times of one of Cicero’s advocates weeping when a particularly treasured fish passed away.
Birds
Falconry dates back to the beginning of civilization, with humans using birds of prey to help them hunt and these birds were highly prized and decorated. Homing birds, such as pigeons, have been used to carry messages at least as far back as the Roman era. Perps in part because we can’t fly ourselves, birds continue to inspire and delight us to this day.
With such an established history, our relationship with the animals that cohabit our world will surely continue for as long as we walk the Earth ourselves. So then, in which ways can we celebrate this enduring love for our pets? - Well, one great way is with a custom pet portrait!
