Crown Prince Friedrich + Katte + process + Köpenick Castle

Info

A very important show was opened and is worth seeing !!!

The exhibition by the Secret State Archives of Prussian Cultural Heritage

and the Kunstgewerbemuseum of the Berlin State Museums

marks the start of a series of events organized by the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation

on the occasion of the 300th birthday of Frederick the Great on January 24

, 2012.

The Prussian king had "Anno 1730" in mind and his eldest son so

divided that the crown prince wanted to flee abroad . His plan failed.

Before a court-martial in Köpenick Castle , Friedrich

and his helper, Lieutenant Hans Hermann von Katte , were now at

stake.

What was happening in Prussia in 1730 can be viewed from three perspectives

: as a drama of a king and his concept of

rulership; as the human and courtly conflict of a crown prince

with his father; as the tragedy of a guards cuirassier lieutenant who

committed criminal acts. The exhibition analyzes

the structures of this history in twelve sequences. It sheds light on their differentiated levels of meaning

and their extensive reception in the visual arts

and literature. The high point of the production is the "judges' table" in the

coat of arms hall of Köpenick Castle. Here the judges-martial had to pass

judgment on the crown prince and his desertion plotters;

Here they bravely stuck to their motto when King Friedrich Wilhelm I

demanded “another saying” about Katte from them.

The catalog is well worth reading:

Catalog of the Secret State Archives of Prussian Cultural Heritage and

the Museum of Decorative Arts – State Museums in Berlin

It analyzes the structures of this history in twelve sequences. He sheds light on

their differentiated levels of meaning and their extensive reception

in literature and the visual arts. For background information,

a complete tableau of the "Dramatis Personae" is offered as an introduction and

a complete process analysis of the "Küstriner Akten" in the appendix,

which allows the course of events from August to November 1730 to be

experienced day by day in the mirror of the official tradition . From all of the above

, and contrary to popular belief, the bottom line is that

This Prussian tragedy in 1730 came to a head not only in the highly treasonable Crimen

laesae Maiestatis, but also in the military crime of the desertion

conspiracy, which “to make an example of” was imperative

– if Friedrich Wilhelm I wanted to remain king in Prussia
