There was you.
There was me.
And then there was us.
Forever started when I first looked at you.
Forever started when I first heard your voice.
Your big strong hands clasping my fragile ones,
Promising an infinity stretching to beyond.
As I stood in my sturdy legs, you were my shadow.
As I stumbled in the dark, you were my glow.
As I struggled in the blizzard, you were my plow.
You were there, always present, directing me where to go.
Soon I learned to do things on my own,
I forgot, I abandoned, I left the town.
You only smiled, bid goodbye,
Resisting the urge to break and cry.
I got lost in a bigger world, unsure of what to do.
I got drowned in vast oceans, too scared to resurface.
After crossroads and cul-de-sac, now I’m back in my little town,
Carrying a shimmer of hope, a flicker of warmth.
Forever ended when you closed your eyes,
Blind to the world, blind to the sky.
Forever ended when you stopped breathing,
Body freezing, veins not pulsing, heart not beating.
In that cold dark corner on my back I lay,
Tears threatening to betray.
Regret, hatred and loss find me,
Crawling in my heart, in my soul, and in my body.
In your hands I found a square photograph,
Of you, of me, and of my mom.
In your pocket I found a folded envelop,
A letter of goodbye, of love and of hope.
There was you.
There was me.
And then there was nothing left.
The semicolon project, a movement to help depressed people continue their lives.
