Engagement Superstitions from Around the World

Info

Weddings have their customs and superstitions but did you know that the process of engagement and how the engagement ring is handled or chosen has its share of superstitions too? Note that these beliefs and superstitions are nothing more but old wives’ tales passed from one generation to the next from different parts of the world. Although it is highly unlikely that bespoke engagement rings will determine how your marriage ends up, reading this article is a fun break from all the wedding preparations you are doing right now.

Here is a list of engagement superstitions and decide for yourself if you want to believe in them or not:

Don’t let someone try your engagement ring

Overexcited family members or friends may want to try your engagement ring, but there is a belief that this is a bad idea. If you let someone else wear your engagement ring, your wedding might not push through. Worse, the lady who tried it on may steal all your luck and happiness – and even the heart of your fiancée.

Public proposals are equivalent to public scandals

If your man proposes to you in public, it is believed that your marriage will also be getting bad luck and this marital trouble will result in unwanted attention from the public.

No snakes on proposal day

If a man is planning to do a proposal but sees a snake on his way, he is advised to turn back and try another day again since a snake is a sign of bad luck.

Diamonds protect you

In Ancient Greece, they believe that diamonds act as protection from the “evil eye,” which was believed to cause bad luck, illness, and death. Women who wear diamonds are protected from the evil eye because the sparkle blinds it. Well, you believe in these superstitions or not, but a diamond ring is a wish of every bride. A diamond ring means cupid hit you

In some myths, cupid’s arrow is tipped with a diamond. Therefore, diamond rings are believed to be the best engagement ring as it guarantees love just as how anyone who gets struck with cupid’s arrow will fall head over feels.

Borrow jewelry only from happily married women

If a bride-to-be needs to borrow jewelry, it is advised that she gets them only from women who have long and happy marriages. Otherwise, the negativity of their marriage will be transferred to her and her marriage once she wears the jewels.

Family heirlooms can carry a curse or a blessing

Most families who own a precious gem uses this as a family heirloom passed from one generation to the next. It is said that depending on the last bearer if she had a happy marriage, the ring will bring good fortune. But if the bearer had a bad marriage, the ring will bring bad luck. It is also believed that you can counter the bad luck by altering the ring by resetting the gemstones into a new ring or replacing the gemstones.
