Factors That Negatively Contribute to Bone Health

Info

Bones give us strength and when they become weak, they could get fractured easily. Bone fracture is a painful condition and if it is serious, surgery may be required to fix the fracture. Surgical interventions of fractures generally require the use of orthopedic implants like Hand Fracture System, Titanium, PFNA Ortho, and Tens Nailing. The choice of implant will completely depend upon the seriousness and location of the fracture.

But there are certain parameters that negatively affect our bone health and we can even control them. In this post, we are going to discuss some parameters that weaken our bones, and avoiding doing so could make a positive impact.

Factors that Weakens Our Bones

Consumption of Tobacco

We’re not unaware of the fact that consumption of tobacco is bad for our health plus, it is also not good for our bones either. People who smoke have high chances of developing osteoporosis and the reason for this is their low bone density. Smoking reduces bone density by attacking the bone cells, and this is done by the production of free radicals. Plus, smokers also tend to have a high concentration of cortisol, a stress hormone. This hormone also negatively affects bone strength.

Sedentary Lifestyle

This is again something our fault like smoking in weakening our bones. We cannot expect to make our bones strong by just sitting on the sofa. A lifestyle with no or little physical activity is not only bad for our bones but also our overall health. Thus, to avoid making bones weak, we need to change our lifestyle to an active one. Besides this, doing exercise regularly will help too. An active lifestyle not only ensures strong & healthy bones but also makes sure the full range of motion of the joint along with the strength of the muscles and tendons.

High Sodium Intake

As the sodium level increases than its normal value, our body starts releasing calcium. This has a direct impact on our bones. This means high sodium intake reduces the amount of calcium thus, contributing to the weakening of bones. According to the American Heart Association, it is advised not to consume more than 2,300 milligrams per day, whereas, most adults are suggested not to consume more than 1,500 milligrams per day.

Drinking too Much Alcohol

Alcohol is also bad for our body just like tobacco, and it contributes to the weakening of bones as well. For those who consume alcohol in high quantities, their cortisol (stress hormone) level is higher and the level of hormones like estrogen and testosterone is low. Both these factors make our bones weak. So, this is in our hands and to avoid weakening our bones, we need to limit consumption of alcohol.

Staying at Home throughout the Day

Vitamin D plays an essential role in the absorption of calcium in our body and one of the best natural sources of vitamin D is sunlight. So, when we don’t move out from our home throughout the day, our body will start lacking vitamin D. Thus, this will directly affect the consumption of calcium in our body. The lower the calcium, the weaker will be our bones. So, smartness lies in getting enough vitamin D through sunlight so that the calcium level and bone density in the body remains good.

These are the factors that contribute rapidly to make our bones weak in one or the other ways. If we look at these parameters closely and start making changes in our lives, we can move towards strengthening our bones. A weak bone is a sign of a weak body and when this happens the person becomes unable to perform even routine activities. Besides this, a weak bone is also prone to get fractured even with a slightly awkward movement of the bone or the joint. So, keeping bones strong is in our hands and we need to make efforts for that.
