Friend-an unforgettable one

I still  remember  it was when  I was in the 7th std. I was one of the class  monitor  of the class  with a strength  of  100. To be a class  monitor  was a very hectic  work we had 8 periods  in  a day and  we  we  given  homework  everyday. We had our copies  checked  every day and  it was the job of  the  class  monitor  to redistribute the copies back to the students  so  that  they  can bring the copies back after doing their homeworks the next day. Apart from the subjects we had ,we also had cursive writings for English, Hindi and manipuri .
Apart  from  this the class monitor had his own reputation, usually the class topper always punctual and disciplined.

One day I forgot to bring my homework copy and teacher was a very strict one ,ma'am Monalisa .I was worried and couldn't concentrate the first two classes and then I heard a voice

"Delia ,u take my notebook, let us darkened my name and rewrite your name on my notebook . Problem solved  "this was Sarita .

I  couldn't believe my eyes and I blinked and asked her , "How can we do that? ?"

"It's okay. ....u are the class monitor and it's not good that ma'am scolds you in front of the class "

It was true and within seconds I had my name written on her copy and she had placed it above the piles of copies that were ready to be checked.

Few hours passed and it was the time when I was time for redistribution of the copies. Each name was read aloud by ma'am Monalisa and then it was my turn
"Delia ..." She was confused. We knew it from her gesture.
She  uttered "Why have you darkened your name and rewritten it  ??"

I was silent.

"Anyways, next  is Rita. "And she continued.

Finally, I took a long deep breath and exhaled out in great relieved.

That day luckily she didn't find out who hadn't done their homeworks. after the class I hugged Sarita and cried "Thank you "
"It's okay. ........if you were me you would have done the same thing "
It's been 10 years but her voice, when she said this  ,is still ringing in my ears. ......

I don't know where she is now but I miss her. ....
