How Can You Prevent an App from Accessing the Internet?

Info

Firewalls not only protect you from malware and other security threats but can also be set up to prevent apps from accessing your internet. They can pose security risks for users as most apps are designed to stay online. This post will show you how to stop an app from Chrome firewall settings to access the internet, even if your firewall is turned on.

There are many reasons you might choose to do this. Here are some examples:

1. You can disable automatic updates. Some online apps insist that they automatically update themselves. This could cause some functionality to be broken.

2. It is possible to increase parental control: Many games for children allow you to play offline and online with multiple people. You can use chrome firewall settings to block your child from playing online with strangers.

3. You can disable in-app ads. Some apps are free and bombard users with irritating ads. These ads can be silenced by cutting off internet access.

4. You can prevent an app from connecting with public Wi-Fi. Windows Firewall allows you to allow certain apps to connect on your home Wi-Fi while blocking them from connecting via public Wi-Fi. This is often completely insecure and poses a threat to your device and you.

Windows 10: How to stop an app from accessing the internet

1. Go to Control Panel from the Start Menu.

2. Click on Windows Firewall from the Control Panel.

3. Click on Advanced Settings in the left panel.

4. Click on Outbound Rules. This will stop internet access to any app.

5. Click on New Rule in the Actions panel located to the right of the window.

6. You can choose the type of firewall rule you want to create. Click on Program, then click Next.

7. You can now choose to block all or specific programs from the Internet. Use the Browse button and click on This program path to locate the app to be blocked. Next.

If you know the application path, you can also type it. A pathway for an application is typically one of these:

• C: Program filename of the app that you wish to block.

• C: Program Files(x86), name of the app that you wish to block.

8. You can now specify how to stop the app from being connected to the internet. Next, click Block the connection and then click Next.

9. Now you can choose when to apply the block. To block the app completely from the internet, tick all three boxes (Domain/Private, and Public). Next.

10. Name the rule that you just created. You could call this "Block Chrome" if you have blocked Google Chrome from accessing the internet. Your rules can be named to help you recall which apps have been blocked and allow you to undo them when you want.

11. Click Finish. Now your new rule has been activated. All of your rules can be viewed in the Actions panel, Windows Firewall > Advanced Settings > Outbound Rules.

Windows Firewall whitelist creation

Firewalls are designed to protect your devices by blocking or monitoring insecure connections. You may need to allow an application to pass through your firewall using the chrome firewall setting. This is called whitelisting.

Here are the steps to managing a whitelist within Windows Firewall.

1. Type firewall into the search box and click Start. Click Windows Firewall.

2. Click Allow an App or Feature through Windows Firewall.

3. Next, click on Change settings.

4. Now you can tick or untick each app's Private or Public box. Apps that have your data will not be able to connect to public Wi-Fi. Clicking the Public button will allow them to do so.

There are other ways to block internet access from Windows

There are many other options if you don't want to use Windows Firewall. To temporarily block your device's access to the internet, you can use the Action Center to activate AirPlane mode. You can deactivate AirPlane mode to reconnect your device to the internet.

You can also get third-party firewall applications for Windows. These apps will protect and secure your computer just as well. If you are having trouble configuring Windows or simply want to explore more firewall features, it might be worth investing in a firewall app.
