The Airport Express is one of those Apple products that are not so well known to the public and that can be very useful if we know how to take advantage of it. Therefore, in this article, we will explain how it works in reference to its four most interesting practical uses for almost all users.
Create a wireless network connected to a router or cable modem without Wi-Fi
If at home or in the office you have a router/cable modem, which does not have the capacity to generate a Wi-Fi network by itself, when connecting it to the Airport Express, you will be able to generate a wireless network so that later you can connect your laptop, your iPhone, iPad, etc. In work environments, you can find it very useful to take your Airport Express to other offices or places where you have a presentation/meeting, to create your own wireless network. In a leisure environment, you can take it to a Hotel and generate your Wi-Fi network from the Hotel.
Create a second Wi-Fi wireless network
If at home or in the office, you already have a router with the capacity to create a Wi-Fi network, but you are interested in having a second wireless network, for example, to connect your children and control your browsing on the Internet, or use it as a network for your guests, etc. By connecting your Airport Express to your Wi-Fi router, you can use the Airport Utility to configure this second wireless network.
Network your speakers or printers
If at home or in the office, you have a wireless network, but you only have a few speakers and they are not compatible with Airplay, you can connect the Airport Express through the audio jack port. In this way, we can send music to the Airport Express from iTunes, from the iPhone or the iPad, so that it reproduces it through the speakers.
If at home or in the office, you have a wireless network, but you only have a printer without the capacity to connect itself to the network, you can connect the Airport Express via USB. This way you will be able to network that printer, and print from anywhere in our house without the need to connect any cables. You can easily centralize the entire printing service in a printer within small offices.
If what we want to put in a network is a hard drive, although the AirPort Express has a USB 2.0 port, Apple does not allow this functionality. If this is what you need to make wireless backups or share in network documents, you have the option of using a Time Capsule. In itself, the Airport Express does not have storage since it does not have a built-in hard drive.
Expand your Wi-Fi network
First, you have to explain that Apple only ensures the expansion of a Wi-Fi network to cover a large office/house, between stations Airport (Express, Extreme, and Time Capsule). If you use the Airport Express to expand a Wi-Fi generated by a router from another manufacturer, there are serious chances of not getting it.
That said if you already have an Airport station generating a wireless network and we want to expand its network to reach all the places in our office/house, you can use the Airport utility to connect the Airport Express to that network and that it serves as an amplifier.
Keep in mind that the broadband that we will receive through this extension will be approximately half of the original. The Airport Utility to manage the Airport Express from the iPad, iPhone is free and you can find it in this link to the App Store.
