Electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigarettes or vapes, are battery-powered devices that simulate smoking by heating a liquid (e-liquid or vape juice) into an aerosol that the user inhales. E-cigarettes typically consist of a mouthpiece, a battery, a heating element, and a tank or cartridge that holds the e-liquid.
E-liquids are usually made up of propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerin, flavorings, and nicotine (although nicotine-free e-liquids are also available). The user inhales the aerosol, commonly referred to as vapor, which is produced when the heating element vaporizes the e-liquid.
E-cigarettes were first introduced as a less harmful alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes, as they do not produce the tar and carbon monoxide found in tobacco smoke. However, there is still an ongoing debate among health experts about the long-term health effects of e-cigarettes, particularly as they relate to the potential for addiction to nicotine and the risks associated with inhaling other chemicals and particles in the aerosol. Some studies have also suggested that e-cigarettes may act as a gateway to traditional smoking, especially among young people.
Regulations around e-cigarettes vary widely by country and region. Some jurisdictions have banned the sale of e-cigarettes altogether, while others have implemented age restrictions, flavor bans, and other measures aimed at reducing use among minors and mitigating potential health risks.
