Jacobs Technology - Diversifying Its Business

Info

Founded in 1903 in Cleveland, Ohio, Jacobs Technology is a US-based international technical professional services firm that provides a wide range of engineering, scientific and construction services. Its growth has been both organic and through acquisitions. It has also diversified its operations into the areas of pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and sterile facilities.

Acquisitions

Earlier this week, Jacobs announced upcomingtechno.com an agreement to acquire software provider BlackLynx Inc. It will be a part of the company's Cyber & Intelligence business unit. Combined, the two companies will offer a suite of edge computing software solutions to national security agencies.

The acquisition will give Jacobs access to 14 of the United States' 18 intelligence agencies. It will also help the company provide real-time data insights to its clients. Its software can be used for thermal detection, radar, and missiles. The company's products will be available on a software-as-a-service (SaaS) model.

The BlackLynx acquisition is the latest in a series of purchases by Jacobs' intelligence arm. The company's previous acquisitions include The Buffalo Group and KeyW Holding Corp. These deals transformed Jacobs' cybersecurity capabilities.

The Buffalo Group provides mission-critical solutions for federal agencies. Its services are used in multiple domains, including defense, intelligence, and law enforcement. Its software is designed to protect classified networks. The Buffalo Group is based in Virginia and provides advanced analytical capabilities to the U.S. Intelligence Community.

Its software can be used for cybersecurity management, cloud integrations, and hybrid-cloud infrastructure. The company also offers a variety of cybersecurity management, analytics, and software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions for national security agencies.

In the last year, Jacobs secured several large government contracts. These include the Oak Ridge Reservation Cleanup contract, which will be awarded over a 10-year period. Its revenues in the fourth quarter grew 3.7 percent compared to the third. Its net revenue grew 2.5 percent on a pro forma basis.

Diversification into the areas of pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and sterile facilities

Having delivered two new modular biological production facilities for Pfizer within the strictest construction schedules, Jacobs Technology is preparing for its next milestone in the diversification of its business. The company is also expanding its sterile manufacturing capabilities at its Halle/Westfalen site in Germany. The site boasts more than 60 years of experience in cytotoxic drugs and is renowned as one of the most innovative and dependable producers of sterile medication.

The new manufacturing building is expected to be completed by 2024. It will help to support Bristol Myers Squibb's ongoing efforts to meet the global demand for medicines.

Biopharmaceuticals include therapeutic proteins, vaccines, polysaccharides, reagents, and diagnostics. These products are produced through recombinant DNA technology, which is a form of biotechnology.

These products are produced using host cells. By modifying the genes of the host, the proteins can grow into medicines. These drugs are more expensive to produce. However, they are effective in pituitary dwarfism and wound healing. The pharmaceutical industry is beginning to explore new clinical applications for these products.

These types of drugs have revolutionized the pharmaceutical industry. The market for biologic drugs is estimated to grow at a rate of 18 percent a year. It is estimated that more than a dozen biologic drugs are on the market today. Developing a new product requires a deep understanding of the principles underlying health and disease.

While the "Transform" phase was marked by impressive sales growth, the "Evolve" phase will focus on targeted expansion of existing business and diversification into adjacent business segments. The goal is to strengthen Siegfried's position as an integrated supplier to the pharmaceutical industry.

Misled workers about dangers of coal ash

Despite its prestigious name, Jacobs Engineering did not really do anything to keep workers safe from the hazards of coal ash. Several employees have died, and more than half a dozen lawsuits have been filed in the past three years.

The company has been accused of tampering with exposure-level tests. It also lied to workers, and failed to provide adequate protective gear.

A federal judge ruled last November that Jacobs had indeed broken a legal duty to protect its workers. But that isn't the only reason why the global engineering firm was sued.

The company is also being blamed for exposing workers to toxic fly ash, which contains arsenic and radium. While it's true that Jacobs was aware of these hazards, it did not do anything to help its workers. In fact, many did not even get personal air monitors.

The EPA did some testing early on. It found that the coal ash had high concentrations of mercury, lead, selenium, and other metals. The EPA also wanted to provide Tyvek suits for workers.

In response to a query by ENR, an attorney for the 50 plaintiffs did not return a call. However, the American Coal Ash Association says there's no truth to the claim.

Another lawyer, Roy Mason, from Maryland, said that worker exposure to coal ash is still under the radar. His clients are one of hundreds of lawsuits filed since the spill.

Relocation to Pasadena in anticipation of growth

Almost 50 years ago, the Jacobs Engineering Company started out as a small consulting firm in Pasadena. The firm primarily served manufacturers of large-scale process equipment. It later expanded its services into consulting and flowsheet development. It also offered analysis of new processes and feasibility studies.

Jacobs has grown into a global firm that operates in the United States, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. It works in defense, aerospace, oil and gas, water, transportation, and aviation. The company is considered one of the largest providers of technical services in the world.

The Jacobs Company has been publicly traded since 1970. It is one of the five prime contractors involved in NASA's "Journey to Mars" program. It is also a major partner in the Missile Defense Agency.

The company's employees are primarily located in Texas, with a total of nearly 4,500. It also has offices in 25 countries around the world. Its headquarters is in the Harwood Center in downtown Dallas. The company recently secured two contracts worth over $1 billion.

It has been working with the Missile Defense Agency for 28 years. It is also one of the five prime contractors involved in NASA's program to launch a next generation rocket.

The company is expected to employ over 200 people within a 12-month period. It will also continue to support the development of advance systems. It has offices in the United States, Europe, and Africa.
