Hisachi Ouchi, Aruna shanbog, Lynn Gilderdale.
These names are known for all sad and wrong reasons. When we hear the term mercy killing, we begin questioning about the very concept and try imagining ourselves in such situations.
Euthanasia or Mercy killing is still illegal in lot of countries, from a snail paced law led country like ours to a liberal country like Canada. Should legal system really have such control over people's own life, emotions and wishes?

Hisashi ouchi was one of the three unfortunate people who were exposed to a freak accident in a nuclear plant of Japan. He was so severely radiated that his chromosomes itself were "shattered". His DNA was erased and his body forgot its functions. His white blood cells were 0. Few days after the accident, his skin began to drop off the body. He needed blood transfusions, almost dozen a day. He used to bleed from cavities in his face. Few days later, his muscles began falling off his bones. His intestines had melted off inside. Hemorrhaging brain followed by his heart failing thrice. He was pleading all along the 83 days of his live hell to end his suffering. First week of his ordeal, he formed words and begged to put him out of pain. Was he eligible for Mercy killing?

Aruna Shanbogh, an Indian nurse who was raped and brutally almost killed by the ward boy who strangulated her with a dog chain which cut off her oxygen supply leaving for dead, which wasn't enough to kill but leave her deaf, blind, paralysed in vegetative state for next 42 years. 42 fucking years. She could survive on mashed food only. She could not move her hands or legs, could not talk or perform even most basic human functions.
The ward boy, Valmiki was charged with attempted murder and robbery of her earring but not her life and honour. Court sentenced him seven years which was further reduced by one year. Kudos to the law! Was Aruna, existing like a vegetable eligible for Mercy killing?

Lynn Giderdale was a lively girl who lived in Sussex, England. She participated in sailing, was captain of her school's netball team and won prizes for ballet. Does this person seem like she would need mercy killing? No, right?
She fell ill after getting vaccinations and was diagnosed by Chronic fatigue symptoms which doesn't sound severe but it progressed to a level where she was bed ridden. Her legs were paralysed, she couldn't sit up or even lift her head. She was unable to speak, read or write. Her memory was erased and gone. She has muscle spasms, severe light and sound sensitivity. She was very much suffering every second of it but things got a little better when she could move her hands a little and she learnt use of internet, only to be hit worse by another bout of lung infections and menopause. She indicated she was sexually molested at hospitals but who should be prosecuted when she had tubes in her mouth, chest and inner thighs. She attempted suicide and failed even to die properly.
Her mother, Kay Giderdale, a trained nurse and remained 24/7 next to her daughter as caretaker for 12 years, enduring with faith and hope, until she helped Lynn get final rest by giving extra doses of her drugs. She was charged with murder of her daughter. Was Lynn eligible for Mercy killing?

Can you imagine how it would feel to feel the skin slowly fall off and muscles get detached from bones and your insides melt? Can you imagine seeing someone you know go through that? Would still try to use conscience as to avoid passing any judgement? This is not a taboo that should be discussed over & over again only to be inconclusive. One might argue about the criminal activities that could happen in name of Euthanasia, one could point out hundred ways it might be used in all possible sorts of nefarious activities, well, one can point out lotta things on both polarities of a discussion but it doesn't take away the fact that there ARE people who need Euthanasia. Every religion states to take an innocent life is biggest sin that can be committed, they also say suicide is just as bad but is life really worth enduring when there can be no higher purpose other than just surviving. when all the loved ones suffer along, when there is no difference between pains of death and trials of life. Would appreciate to hear different opinions on this particular topics and also feel free to leave comments on topics you'd want to discuss.
