When you start one of these Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files from Microsoft Office, Compatibility Mode is switched on, and you visit [Compatibility Mode] in the title bar of the document window. Compatibility Mode ensures your files may still be completely edited by others who are using prior versions of Microsoft Office although you might no longer need this backward capability. What are your choices for working with these"older" but significant files in a newer version of Microsoft Office?

Options for Working with Office 2003 Files Whenever you're editing a document initially created in an Office 2003 program, you can continue to work in Compatibility Mode and save the file as usual without changing the file format. In other words, keep working with it and saving as previously; the document will not be automatically changed to a new edition. These Office 2003 files can nevertheless be opened from Office 2010 or any earlier version.

Save to Newest Version. It is possible to save any Office 2003 or earlier file as an Office 2007 or newer version. The Save As the option is found under the Backstage View/File tab (Office 2010 and newer) or the Office Button (Office 2007). The drawback is that unless you specify a different location or delete the old file, both files will remain in precisely the exact same location but with different file extensions.

Convert to Newest Version. To benefit from all of the latest features in your current version of Microsoft Office, you can convert a file to the appropriate Office 2010/2007 file format. By way of example, the Convert command in Microsoft Word simplifies and simplifies a document with the.doc format, and upgrades the document to the.docx format. The Convert option is recommended over Save As.

How to Convert a Document to a brand new Microsoft Office File Format

To Combine a File:

In-Office 2010 and newer: Select the Backstage View (File tab) and select the Convert button from the Info tab. In-Office 2007: Just click the Office Button from the upper-left corner and select Convert in the menu

Next, you will notice that a program-specific prompt about the convert action. Navigate through your own choices.

If the program doesn't close and reopens automatically, close the file and reopen it to keep on using it together with all of the available features in your present Office program. The converted file will open with the appropriate file extension. By way of instance, when you save an Excel 2003 file containing macros, it will typically be converted as an Excel macro-enabled workbook (.Xlsm expansion ).

Converted documents have been replaced with the upgraded file and document format. The Convert command is not available when a file is already saved with an Office 2010/2007 file format. Notice: Before proceeding with the converting process, consider if you want to first backup your documents.
