Structural abnormalities: Some people may have structural abnormalities in the nose, throat, or jaw that contribute to OSA.

Alcohol and sedative use: These substances can relax the muscles in the throat, making it more difficult to breathe while sleeping.

Diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea

If you suspect you have OSA, your doctor may recommend a sleep study to confirm the diagnosis. During a sleep study, you will be monitored overnight while you sleep, and your breathing patterns, heart rate, and oxygen levels will be recorded.

If you are diagnosed with OSA, there are several treatment options available. The most common treatment is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), which involves wearing a mask over the nose and/or mouth while you sleep. The mask is connected to a machine that delivers a continuous flow of air, keeping the airway open and allowing for normal breathing. Other treatments may include:

Oral appliances: These devices are custom-made by a dentist or orthodontist and are designed to reposition the jaw and tongue to keep the airway open during sleep.

Surgery: In some cases, surgery may be necessary to remove excess tissue in the throat or to reposition the jaw to improve breathing.

Lifestyle changes: Losing weight, quitting smoking, and avoiding alcohol and sedatives can help reduce the severity of OSA.

Obstructive sleep apnea is a severe sleep disorder that can have a significant impact on a person's health and quality of life.
