Particle or a Wave??

The wave-matter duality of light has always fascinated scientists and soon this duality extended to matter which was discovered by Louis De Broglie.

But how did this all started? How did scientist concluded the dual behaviour of light and then matter too? It was the infamous double slit experiment.

First performed by Thomas Young in 1801,double slit experiment consisted of a board with 2 rectangular slits in it separated by a distance,an observation board and a device that shoots photons,sort of a gun.
Photons were shot towards the observation board and the double slit board was kept in between so that a photon had 50% chance of passing​ from either of the two slits.

Scientists just kept an eye on observation board and left the photon gun and double slit board isolated.

Think of throwing infinite amount of marbles at high speed from a rectangular window (throwing only straight and not in slanting way) and a screen where they hit,the most obvious pattern of marbles at the screen would be the same sized rectangular pattern as of the window. The expected and obvious result was that photons would make 2 rectangular shapes on the observation board as the slits were rectangular. But the observation was completely different,photons made a pattern known as interference pattern that is formed when a wave(like a water wave)passes through the slits.

This was one of the most important result in physics. This showed that light was behaving as a wave.

Now scientists put an observing device(like a camera) near the 2 slits to get to know that from which slit the photon passes.The experiment was conducted again and this time they behaved like a particle,making 2 rectangular shapes on the observation board just like marbles!! This was insane!! Just by observing something,it was converted into particulate form. That means if we simply don't  observe photons they will act as waves.

In 1920s Louis de Broglie conducted the same experiment but this time with ELECTRONS. He found exactly same results as of with photons. This confirmed that wave-particle duality not only exist for light but for matter too.

What does that mean? Yes,that means that we all are waves when we are not observed,we too have a wavelength but this wavelength is inversely proportional to momentum that means when we are not observed,we have a really small wavelength (negligible) and so we don't behave like wave and as soon as we are observed,we change back to particles but what do we need for observation??
