Past Tense

I know fairytales exist. I know that this world contains creatures that we have not yet seen with our eyes and that palaces are made for kings and queens and random people who shall marry their children. I know that there is a 'happily ever after'. The sole reason why I know all this? Because this time, in fact the only time I got something so ethereal, I thought of it as a perfectly good opportunity to eke out my luck and guess what? Lady Luck screwed it up big time.

I see her walking gracefully down the aisle, holding the hand of her stepfather. Patrick is waiting for her, his smile expectant, the kind a child is when waiting for his favourite TV show. She lets go of Henry's hand and stands on the platform. She quickly scans the crowd, her eyes searching for the one person she was dreading to see, at least I thought so but then she smiles when she sees me. 

Of course, it is over for her.

It's a bad time to say this but you look beautiful. Your white gown is achingly splendid, the mermaid flow is accentuating your curvy body and I find it tough to not sigh at what we could have been. Your eyes! Dark brown, a tint of mahogany but the sparks of light emanating give me goosebumps. You can emote through your eyes- I see pity mixed with triumph this time.The last time I had seen them, I could not sense what you were feeling. Tears had prevented me.

He is rich, he is successful. He is smarter and more handsome. Maybe he will decorate you with his notes. I don't know. You chose comfort over me.

I choose the past over you. The past tense, you see, still manages to leave me with a pain in my chest and regret in my mind.

You stay happy. In the end, it is all that matters.
