Points of Darkness

Look at that ugly child left dying in a corner

While his companions fled bold and handsome

The walls of the cellar growing till they swallowed him whole

Or was it he that grew smaller?

The bars of his prison grew thicker and closer

And those that promised to stay and love

Were the very first to leave

Beautiful words dissolve in thin air

Like a sweet perfume on a windy day

While lies and treachery, as a cloying stench

Sinks into the flesh

Burning and wasting good, able-bodies

Leaving sallow, withered skin in place

With a grey-green pallor

That pales along with the soul

Love, that double-edged sword

The only place of happiness at the tip

Fall off one end; pain and sacrifice

The other, hurt and betrayal

A delicate situation,

Not for all to withstand

Fall off, most do, one by one

One end or the other, matters not

In the end, all that’s left behind

Burns the size of a heart,

Sometimes, not even time can heal

Remember when you had spirit?

Remember when you were jolly?

Fresh and alive, ready to make the world yours

Now dreams are called fantasies

And hope is but fleeting

The will to live escapes

Falling through your fingers

Much like the sands of time

The one corner of your world

Where you remain,

As content as you can be

Behind walls the world can’t reach

Where you will rest

For all your remaining days
