PS2 Game Review - Rogue Galaxy

Info

Rogue Galaxy is a gem made by the creative team at Level 5. It was released in Japan about two years ago, but now, a much delayed English version has finally come out, and it seems that the additional time spent on it has been worthwhile.

Rogue Galaxy is a lavishly produced action RPG, boasting stunning cell-shaded graphics, great music and voice-over and chalk-a-bloc with side quests.

Even as the PS2 breaths its last after the release of the PS3, its still has a bit left in its tank, and Rogue Galaxy shows that.

The game begins on the desert planet of Rosa where Jaster dreams of becoming a space pirate and venturing into the realms of outer space.

Jaster befriends a mysterious man during a monster attack on his hometown, and he is then given a sword.

As fate would have it, a couple of space pirates mistakenly assume Jaster as the legendry hunter, the Desert Claw, and make him an offer which he was not able to refuse.

Thus begins a grand adventure throughout the galaxy in search of great treasures, fighting villains and lauding the name of space pirates.

Unfortunately, the storyline is somewhat clichéd and comes with familiar trapping of the RPG genre, but to its credit Rogue Galaxy keeps up the pace of story and does not drag too much.

The real meat of the game is the fast and challenging battle system and the exploration of every planet that space pirate’s encounter.

So the action is all there in real-time, but with a dash in turn-based mechanics as well. Basically, while romping throughout many dungeons.

Guide: RE 7 Antique Coins

The player fights monsters in random battles using the X button to use the primary weapon and the square button for the secondary weapon, a gun in the case of Jaster (players can control any one of the seven playable characters).

Sometimes the O button is used to jump and kill heavily armored monsters. The game does a fine job in getting the players to fight the different types of monsters, but it sometimes gets dull because of the repetition.

This is a minor glitch, which will not deter the player from having good time with Rogue Galaxy.

The battle system features a strategy menu which is not too complex and has a few simple basic commands that the AI follows like attacking the same enemy or backing of the enemy.

Sometimes player has to win challenges to get Hunter Coins, which are used to buy alternate costumes and the likes, but these challenges are not that hard to tackle, besides they add incentives to the battle.

Character development is done through a ‘Revelation Flow’ chart. This is basically a chart with a number of different skills and can be learnt by inputting items won after battles.

For example, to learn a Curse skill, the items Voodoo Mask and Sanchez Fruit is required. This is a fun way to make characters learn skills while the base values of HP, MP and the likes are tackled in the traditional level-up system.

The game may not have an entirely complex or an original battle system, but makes no pretences with its nuances, and focuses on giving a player fully fun time.

The graphics are quite splendid to say the least, considering that PS2 is on its last legs. The game uses cel-shading, and where there are some dull graphics it retains a realistic aspect.

The in-game graphics are animated nicely, while the cut-scenes are also quite well made using almost the same in-game graphics. The frame rate stays steady for most part although with many enemies on the screen, the game does chug a bit.

Locales have a realistic and an identifying feel to them from the forest planet of Juraika to the dark and dank mines on Planet Vedan. The backgrounds have a lot of the detail and feel vibrant.

There are also many cut-scenes, showing the change of different armours and weapons as a brilliant technique. Thumbs up to the graphics.
