The PS5 was released on November 12, 2020, and it was Sony's most ambitious system to date. With the PS4, Sony dominated the previous generation and silenced critics who said that console gaming was dead. Sony intends to repeat its success with the PlayStation 5 after selling over 112 million consoles over the previous seven years and based on early demand, that shouldn't be an issue. The PS5 is the fastest-selling system in US history in terms of unit and dollar sales in its first five months on the market, according to the NPD Group. Even though Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, and GameStop receive new supplies every few weeks or so, they sell out very immediately. If you want to buy a PlayStation 5, you may have to wait many months until supplies levels out. The worldwide chip shortage has caused havoc in the IT industry.

Sony had intended to ramp up PS5 production throughout 2022, with the goal of producing 16 million systems by the end of March, but that number has subsequently been reduced to 15 million. Production issues and part shortages have been blamed for the decrease.

When Sony introduced the PS5 design, it sparked debate among enthusiasts. It was a big cry from the Xbox Series X's massive rectangle and the typical PlayStation range. The two-toned console has a more futuristic appearance, with an interior black area flanked on either side by two white shells, much like a reverse Oreo. There are various Easter eggs hidden in the PS5 hardware that you can miss if you don't look closely. The Square, Triangle, Circle, and X symbols produce a textured pattern on the interior of the white faceplates. This may be seen on the DualSense controller as well.

It's a thoughtful addition that combines form and function. Though I was concerned about how readily dirt and filth might accumulate over extended periods of intensive usage, I never had a problem, but others did not. Make sure your DualSense is clean.
