The sun was hiding coyly on the horizon as a young girl of sixteen hid playfully from her lover. At the same time, two evening shadows were playing with each other, sometimes appearing as one and sometimes completely separate. The masters of these shadows, a girl and a boy of thirteen or fourteen were sitting silently. The girl was trying to make a shape out of a twig of grass, but was failing repeatedly as the twig broke each time. And the boy was intently watching this game. His father was transferred to another city. It was his last day in that small town.
"So the fact that you are going is final," the girl said, finally interrupting the waltz of silence and passivity, without looking at the boy.
"Yes, why?" the boy replied.
"I mean, what's good in that faraway city? I've heard that there are no meadows, only crowds and noise there", the girl said like a wise old person, gazing at the birds going back to their nests after a long day's work.
"You don't know the marvels the city has to offer. Big buildings, lively streets, glittering lights..." the boy answered, imagining himself experiencing those wonderful things. Though the girl and the boy had spent their childhood together, their personalities were poles apart.
"But quietness is bliss", said the girl.
"Only for those who don't know the meaning of life", the boy fired back.
"Won't you miss the soft breeze whispering secrets into your ears or birds inviting you to participate in their game?"
"Won't you get excited when a racing car buzzes past you, when you look at the tall buildings, massive billboards or when you get to a place where the night goddess doesn't cast a glance?" retorted the boy.
"Won't you miss anything of this town" asked the girl with a broken voice, looking into the boy's eyes like a helpless fawn who is going to be hunted soon.
"What's worthy enough to miss in this boring town?" the boy replied carelessly.
The girl stood up to return to her home.
"Where are you going?"
"To my home".
"Won't you stay a little longer? Today's my last day in this town."
"I don't care."
The boy was dumbfounded. Dumbfounded, because she went away without even saying goodbye. Dumbfounded, because he couldn't tell her how he would ask his father to request the girl's father to get transferred to the same city where he was going so that they would be together again.
He was dumbfounded because the girl who was his first love had said that she didn't care.
She was running back home, her eyes fogged with misty tears because the most important person in her life thought she was not worthy enough to be missed.
Both of them were suffering from their first heartbreak, and the sky began to weep at this tragic failure of young love.
