Sources of Scholarships and Grants for Women Studying Law

Info

The perception of the general population is that anyone studying law who does not come from a wealthy family will come out of law school with a hefty debt that must be repaid before he or she will begin to make any real money. In the past, a law school education may have been so expensive and funds so difficult to find that this idea was somewhat true.

However, law students today, especially those who are women, will find an almost endless variety of grants and scholarships to negate some of the astronomical expenses involved in getting a law degree.

Women are still a minority in the occupational field of law so this makes it much more likely that they will be able to snag several scholarships or grants to fund their education.

Some of these sources of college aid are based on achievement or competition while others are just a matter of need. The following places have continuously given support to women seeking a law degree:

• Grants from The American Bar Association Fund for Justice and Education: These scholarships, awarded predominantly to women, are in the amount of $15,000. Over 20 students currently enrolled in law school are given these funds based on their volunteer efforts and their financial need.

• Roscoe Pound Institute: Elaine Osborne Jacobson Award for Women Working in Health Care Law: Applicants must be women presently attending a law school in the United States. This $3,000 award is given to a student who has demonstrated a commitment to a law career advocating for needy women and children, senior citizens, or the disabled.

• Stupski Scholarship for Civic Leadership: This scholarship accessed through Teach for America is available to women willing to delay entering Yale Law School for two years in order to gain first-hand experience in civic leadership. The scholarship provides $10,000 for each year of law school.

• Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund: These scholarships are given to current undergraduate and graduate students who are active in supporting issues promoting issues of peace and justice. The money is given out based on need and may be as much as $10,000.

• Alumni Scholarships: Almost every large law school has an alumni organization, and most fund scholarships of some amount. Ask about these groups and any funding opportunities at the individual college financial aid offices.

• Equal Justice America Fellowships: This organization offers a $1,500 scholarship to law students who work for a non-profit agency whose goal is to help struggling, low-income groups.

Although most of these scholarships will not cover the entire cost of a law school education, several of these awards could take a substantial bite out of the amount needed to get a law degree.

Government grants are also worth checking into, depending on the income and assets of the student applying. By continually searching the internet for future funding opportunities and applying to all that seem like a good fit, most women can finish law school without worrying about massive loans and increasing debt.
