Step-by-step guide on making capsules on your own terms

Info

Fill your own capsules step by step: Let's go! (German version on capslr.com)

The capsule filler comes with a lovingly designed comic guide

You've read (or skimmed) this far and are wondering what the steps are in filling your own capsules?

One really big advantage of working with our CAPSLR® is that your starter kit already comes with a super detailed, 4-page instruction booklet in an appealing comic book look.

We've worked for months to combine maximum clarity with an appealing presentation.

Basically, you just take different plates that are either there to hold the capsule halves or to pre-sort them. Once the powder is filled, you use a so-called powder compactor to fill the capsules to the maximum. Finally, the spring-loaded bearing of the capsule halves is used to press the two parts of the capsule together.

After a little practice, this is really very fast. A powder stop also retains excess powder and ensures that you can work properly. If you want to avoid even the smallest loss of powder, you can start by placing a sheet of paper under the capsule filler to catch the small amounts that may end up next to the filler.

Instead of an unnecessarily long manual for the capsule filler, we prefer to give you an entertaining and descriptive comic manual!

On four pages, not only a short story is told, but above all you learn quickly and clearly how to fill capsules yourself.

How do I dose my self-made capsules?

If you only need a rough orientation, you can orient yourself on the respective volume of the capsule size.

The volume of an empty capsule size 00 is 0.93 milliliters (mL). On average, this is about 750 milligrams (mg) of powder per capsule. If you know the exact density of your powder, you can determine exactly how much powder will fit inside:

Density of your powder Content per capsule

0.6 g/mL 558 mg

0.8 g/mL 744 mg

1.0 g/mL 930 mg

1.2 g/mL 1116 mg

Since our CAPSLR® fills very evenly, you can also simply weigh a few empty capsules with a precision balance, then fill them and weigh them again. This way you know how much powder you have encapsulated and can divide this value by the number of capsules used. You already know how much powder is contained in each capsule.

Which empty capsules do I use?

Gelatine vs. vegan empty capsules

For us it is clear: empty capsules for self-filling should be vegan and without impurities. That is why we do not sell empty capsules made of gelatine. Besides the ethical aspect, there are also technical reasons: Our vegan empty capsules have a shelf life three times longer than the animal alternative and have no taste of their own.

But not only the longer shelf life of up to three years is one of the clear advantages of vegan / vegetarian empty capsules. These empty capsules are also suitable for people who follow a halal or kosher diet.

Which empty capsule size?

Another important aspect is the choice of the size of the capsules that you want to fill yourself. We have chosen the so-called size "00" for this purpose. These capsules are about 2.3 centimeters long and 0.84 centimeters wide.

The choice of capsule size is always a compromise between the ease of swallowing them and the amount of capsules you need to take for a given mass of material. If you choose capsules that are too large, swallowing becomes uncomfortable to impossible. However, if you choose them too small, you will have to take too many capsules for your typical daily dose, which can become quite annoying in the long run.

According to our observation, the empty capsules of size 00 are the best compromise here. This is a size that is easy to swallow on the one hand. At the same time, it is not so small that you have to swallow too many capsules at once to get the desired amount.

A little digression about the material of our vegan empty capsules: HPMC

We already mentioned above that animal empty capsules are made from gelatin (from pigs). But what are our vegan empty capsules actually made of?

The material of our empty capsules is called hypromellose. This is an extract made from the naturally occurring cellulose of (in our case) German pine trees. It is actually used in the tree to stabilize the cell walls and we use it for our super stable empty capsules.

Filling capsules by yourself (or as we say in German "Kapseln selber befüllen") is explained in more detail on capslr.com!
