Stepper Motors - Driving Industries forward.

A direct current motor that moves in precise steps is referred to as a stepper motor. These motors have phases, which are essentially multiple coils arranged in groups. The motor rotates one precise step at a time as power is supplied to each phase in a specific sequence.

NEMA 17 is a size that is commonly chosen for use in CNC Mills and 3D printers, whilst robotic and animatronic devices generally utilize smaller motors. On the other hand, industrial applications such as CNC machines require larger motors.

The faceplate dimensions of a motor mount are defined by its NEMA value. This number only refers to the mounting itself, not the power or size of the actual motor in question. As an example - two different motors can have completely unique mechanical and electrical specifications, but may share the same size mounting.

From an operational standpoint, driving a stepper motor is a little more complex than driving a conventional direct current motor. Stepper motors require a controller that powers phases in a systematic and precisely timed sequence in order to get a motor running.
