The Basics of Cutting Dies

Info

Often associated with stamping and embellishment techniques, cutting dies add interest, convenience and beauty to paper crafting. These handy tools are used to create shapes out of flat materials like paper, fabric, leather, wood and plastic. While the process may seem complicated to those unfamiliar with the art, a little bit of research and practice will help you become an expert in the die cutting world.

During the die cutting process, a metal die is placed on top of a material that needs to be cut. A roller mechanism manually operated by a handle or crank puts pressure between the die and the material. Then, the steel rule of the die cuts or impresses the material according to its design. A wide variety of shapes can be created with a single die.

There are many types of die cutters, each with their own benefits and drawbacks. For example, a simple or straight cutting die performs one cut in a single stroke of the machine. A die that performs a number of different functions is called a progressive die set. Class A progressive dies include several forming stages that can be executed with the same stroke. Progressive dies are typically used for more complex packaging designs.

Other functions that can be performed by a die include kiss cuts, scores and perforations. A kiss cut leaves a small impression or indent on a material that reduces its thickness without completely cutting it. A score makes creases aligned collinearly on the material to aid in making folds. Creasing allows the material to bend inward, which increases its flexibility. Scores and creases can also be made by punching holes into the material.

Some of the most commonly used materials for die cutting are paper, fabric and foam. These are commonly found in hobby and craft stores and are inexpensive. They can be purchased in a variety of colors and textures to suit any project. Paper and fabric are also available in a variety of thicknesses to accommodate projects of all sizes.

Another advantage of using dies is their versatility. Not only can they be used to cut, but they can also be used to emboss or decorate the finished product. Rubber embossing mats can be used to reduce the amount of pressure on the material, allowing it to be impressed rather than cut. This technique is useful for achieving intricate patterns and images on the finished product.

Adding texture to die cut shapes can be achieved by layering them, sprinkling with glitter or heat-setting with embossing powder. You can even use washed-out watercolor to create a flower or petal effect on a card.

Whether you are an experienced crafter or just starting out, die cutting is an easy and convenient way to enhance your creations. It saves you time and energy, allowing you to spend more time on embellishment and design. A little research and experimentation will allow you to discover the endless possibilities that dies can provide!
