The Fortress

For a girl who had her feelings taken for granted for more than a couple of times already, it’s difficult to take risks. The comfort zone is much more appealing to you. So when a random guy pops out of nowhere and tells you he likes you, the alarms come buzzing off immediately. The walls you built around your comfort zone get higher and your safe little camp transforms into a fortress. The scenario is familiar to you already. You know you’ve done this quite a few times before, so you arm yourself with the best weapons you got to scare him off. “He’s not staying there long”, you told yourself, or so you thought.

He kept bugging you for days, weeks, months.. And you asked yourself, “What is wrong with this guy?” At some points, you almost dropped your weapons but then you remembered all those horrible times when you did, so you kept them tighter instead. Yet, his courage did not falter at the prospect of what you call, “a girl’s insanity”. You can’t blame the girl for being ridiculous, she knows better, she has been there. But one day, the stranger got tired of the setup, well, who wouldn’t? So he asked if you wouldn’t really allow him into your goddamn fortress, and of course, you said no. You know he’s losing. You know you’re losing him (and you admit, somehow, you don’t want to). But then again, you can’t lose what you never had. So you let him go. You let him look for someone who deserves him. You let him find a better fortress. So long, stranger!
