She didn’t go to work today. I waited for her just beyond block of her apartment, for two hours. It wasn’t a Sunday so I thought maybe something was wrong. That day went by in a gloom. She didn’t even come down for her usual evening run around the park, two block down. I waited for her.
The next day she was covered from head to toe and tightly clad in a scarf. She was sneezing continuously. So she was sick yesterday, she had a cold. I followed her to make sure she was okay. She got into a cab today, usually she takes the subway. Maybe she wasn’t all too well. I couldn’t keep up with the cab. So I walked down slowly, thought I’d get some exercise, it’d make me look better.
Her office was two stations down. A big shiny glass building, something for a magazine I guess. I waited on the opposite side of the road as usual. She would come down again for lunch, and I’d get to look at her. Today she didn’t come down. I saw her group of friends and she wasn’t there. She was avoiding the cold I thought.
I liked waiting for her. It was like I was her bodyguard. I had no one in the world, everyone was gone. She had been very kind to me once. So now she was my life. But I don’t think she even remembers me now. I’d follow her everywhere she went. Her schedule was my schedule. I kept and eye on her, always looking out for her, and she never even knew I was there.
I didn’t know her name. I could never summon up enough courage and go talk to her. But I knew everything about her. I’d seen her; she was the most extraordinary person. Always so kind to everyone. She gave smiles to stranger just to make their day better. She was the most beautiful woman; and I loved her.
Next Friday she returned home early. Maybe she would go out with her friends. Instead a man showed up. I was instantly on my feet. I followed them to a fancy restaurant. What was going on? Oh God! It was a date! How could she?! I wanted to barge in and knock him right off. But I waited outside. They came out after almost two hours. I was so angry! He walked her home. They talked and laughed all along the road. And I followed them very closely now. I didn’t trust this man one bit; so I had to stay close enough in case he tried something funny. Her apartment came. They stood in front and talked for a while. Then they bid ‘Goodnight’ and he walked away. Oh what a relief it was that they didn’t go upstairs together! Now he was alone, and I could have my share of him. I whizzed past him very fast, pushing him off the curb. He cursed lightly but I was out of sight by then.
The next day, as she went to work, I followed her very closely. I was feeling kind of possessive I guess. And then suddenly she turned back and looked at me. She came close, bent down, smiled the most beautiful smile, and stroking my head said, “Here you go sweet little doggy, you can have the rest of my sandwich.”
