The Space between Us

Earth's terrain was crowded, over population lead to massacres by bombings and by the use of biological weaponry. The countries waged wars for the land, food and water. Peace, a fantasy, Humanity, a joke, Survival was the only hope. These genocides left people in poverty, poor health, homeless.

Finally, the leaders of the nations shook hands on an arrangement made by the Space and Aeronautical Navigational Department (SAND). They agreed on deporting a half of the population of Earth to a not-so-nearby planet. The planet, Nuvita, is about 15 light years away, with a sustainable atmosphere and bountiful natural resources. The SAND explored and marked the planet to be human adaptable and made their maiden voyage to Nuvita on an ark full of human life.

A few years later, after the human settlement on Nuvita, the life on both the planets was peaceful. There were natural births on Nuvita, but no access to return to Earth. However, Nuvita being a larger planet, Earth's population was dumped once in 25 years.

E-mail received. E-mail received. The mobile alert was loud enough to wake up Ava. She knocked down the lamp while searching for her mobile on the table. She sat up straight on seeing the e-mail alert and a wide smile spread across her face. It was a voice note, she took a deep breath and listened to it.

Dear Ava,

Do you know that our ancestors used to do the same thing we are doing now? Writing letters. Though in our case it is voice notes. But still, we have to wait for a day to send or receive it. My mom told me that when she caught me desperately waiting to hear your voice. Can you imagine how difficult it must have been then? *laughs*

I always spend a few minutes into this message and the rest of the day thinking about you. You remember the promise I made you the other day, about me coming to Nuvita for you? Well, I don't think that is gonna happen soon. But I am sure that one day I will be able to look into your eyes, hold your hand, place my lips on yours, feel the skin under your clothes and tell you that you mean the world to me.

Out of the millions of stars between you and me, I always imagine your smile to be the brightest. The slow and soft voice of yours casted an enduring spell of desire enticing my stern heart. You know I am not good with words but I tried, to tell you this. I love you.

Elliot.

Ava suppressed her joy by covering her mouth but her eyes gave away as tears dribbled down her cheeks. She gently put her mobile on the table and fell back on bed. Twenty hours earlier, she was in trouble finding the best way to express her feelings to Elliot. But now, as if he read her mind he told the exact same things she wanted to tell.

Maybe that is love. Making two superstitious minds to think alike and breaking the barriers of fear to connect them with a higher and greater bond must be the power of love. It makes us feel vulnerable but in a good way. Love shows the true colours of life. Falling in love helps us to attain greater heights in life. It brings us charm, to see things in different ways. The grandeur of love is intriguing and one finds oneself in a state of bedazzlement upon receiving the fruits of this transcendence.

Ava reached her mobile and started recording her reply,

Dear El,

The day we got connected on the internet I thought this would be another fling in my life. But as days passed, I found myself flattered by your words. I couldn't help but wonder how intriguing you must be in person. A day never goes by without me thinking about you. You were there for me everytime, you know how to make me smile, you never let me down, you never ridiculed me about my most embarrassing moments. You were the one, you have always been the one for my life. The void may have kept us at a distant but not our thoughts.

I wanted to be the one to say first but you broke the ice first, for that I forgive you. It is you that made me feel I am special, beautiful with your alluring words. We disagreed on some accords but we came through those. But I cannot forgive you on one thing. Why did it take you 5 years to tell me that you love me?
*silence*

*sighs* I love you. I always have. I may not be able to touch you, feel you or kiss you but I assure you that I will always love you. Looking forward to the day I will meet you.

Yours Ava.

She finished with tears filling her eyes and pressed the sent button.

65 million years ago, love was born, humans lost it thousands of years ago and now it is reborn.
