Top 7 Security Tips for Setting Up a New Device

Info

Whenever you get a new device; you install your favorite programs and various other things on it. Some people also buy new peripheral devices with their new PC or laptop. But they forget to get something more important; good security software. If you want to keep your device protected from all internal and external threats then you have to take various security measures.

Keep a strong password

Your password is the basic but most important measure for protection. Whenever you buy a device; set a password immediately. Use a long and strong password and make sure no one knows your password. Do not use the password that is on your old device. Your device should be personal enough that no one can open or use it without your concern.

Install antivirus

Antivirus is one of the basic software programs that you should install when you purchase your device. Always get a reliable antivirus for your computer. Check your device specifications and then browse for an antivirus program which is compatible with your device. If you use the internet on your new device then go for the plan that provides internet security tools. Various antivirus programs provide good device security as well as internet security. Installing  Webroot antivirus product key will ensure that your device is protected from all types of malicious programs and online threats.

Enable your firewall while using the internet

Today the internet is the mainstream for threats. If you are using the internet without any security wall then you are inviting hackers and threats. Always use a firewall that can monitor your network activities. Your router can also work as a firewall for the connected devices but if you don’t use a router then you must enable your firewall. Your device always has a built-in firewall. But due to the malicious threats, getting a personal firewall is always better. Many antivirus programs also provide firewalls. You can either use your firewall software or you can also buy a firewall device (hardware).

Update your software

The very first thing you should check on your device is to make sure that your device is running on the updated OS. Never use outdated OS because malicious programs can easily enter on outdated OS. After OS, check all the installed software programs, if you see any outdated software then update it immediately.

Secure your network

Your device can only be considered as fully protected if you are accessing the secured network. Internet threats are really dangerous and if you use an unsecured network like public Wi-Fi then the threats will get you easily. So you should always use a secured internet connection. There are times when you don’t have a secure connection but you have to use the internet; make use of VPN. Virtual Private Network tool will create a network that is fully secure from the threats. VPN tool helps to mask the IP address to make sure that no cybercriminal can find your location. VPN tool reduces data instruction activities as it sends all the data from a secured channel in an encrypted form.

Get backup

Once you start working on a new device; get all your crucial files. Connect your computer with the internet and make sure your firewall is working and then get all the files on it. If you are copying your data from external devices like a flash drive then scan it before running. Antivirus will remove all the malicious programs from entering your device. If any file or document seems malicious then you should not store that file on your computer.

Wipe out your old device

Keeping your new device protected is not worth it unless you have your crucial data on an older device. If you don’t want to face data-theft issues then remove all the data from the previous device after copying onto the new device.

If you are using your both devices then make sure no one can use your any device. Keep strong passwords on both devices and make sure your passwords are not similar. You can also install multi-license antivirus where you can take care of both devices and monitor your secondary device’s activities from the primary device.
