Unexpected Realization

She did not know what would happen today. She did not know what she wanted to. She had walked into the competition because she had been asked to not because she had wanted to, but still, there was a fervor compelling her to strive for victory.

 She walked towards the allotted room guided by  a volunteer. Her partner trailed behind. There was a glimmer of hope in her partner's eyes which yearned for victory, something she reciprocated. They reached the room and relieved themselves of their bags. They were early. The empty room yawned at them as if their presence had disturbed its sleep.

Her senses detected some noise outside the tuned out rant of her partner. A jolt of excitement assaulted her; she saw an acquaintance.  She rushed behind him. 

"Hi! I didn't......" the words stopped falling. Her eyes fell on the back of the other guy in the room. She felt the familiarity surge through her, but could not identify him. He turned. She drank in his face like she had always done. Unadulterated joy assaulted her. The familiar face from her past had an expression of surprised jubilation etched on his cherished face and she knew it mirrored her own. There were too many emotions and very few words to express them.

She embraced him almost as a reflex hoping it would convey what she didn't trust language to.

That night as she lay in bed she decided something. Even though there was no memory of triumph to inspire contentment in her, there was however satisfaction solicited from a distinct rendezvous. With that thought in her mind and a smirk on her features, sleep claimed her.
