Antibiotics are just as common in veterinary medicine as they are in the world of human healthcare. Your pet will probably need to take one at some point or another. Read on as your pet clinic Wichita, KS tells you about the basics of antibiotics for pets.
How do antibiotics work, anyway?
Antibiotics kill bacteria on or in your pet’s body. They work by weakening bacteria cells’ walls, preventing cells from repairing themselves or stopping cells from multiplying. Note that antibiotics only kill bacteria—they won’t be prescribed for viral infections.
How are antibiotics given to pets?
Internal infections are usually treated with oral antibiotics, which come in pill or chewable tablet form and are taken orally. Ointment or cream antibiotics are applied directly to your pet’s body and are used to treat external infections.
Is there any risk of side effects?
In the proper dosage, antibiotics shouldn’t cause side effects. But some pets are extra-sensitive and may experience vomiting or diarrhea. Tell your vet if you think your pet is reacting adversely to their medication.
