It was a dark night- a lonely one- where stars don't even seem to shine at all. It was that moment- a moment where you could have done something but couldn't. We were colonized- a country where you have to put a smile on your face and try to laugh despite the anxiety and fear. It was that time, where you have to hide your feelings for a greater cause. And that was what I've done.
"You don't have to worry. I've settled down my feelings. I would like to give it a shot, but I don't want to risk our country's independence."
I put up with a smile on my face as I was saying that, though I was sure that my eyes showed a different mix of emotions.
"But if we get to be born again, if we get to be together again once our country gets liberated, promise me one thing- that you won't hesitate."
"Then promise me that you will come back alive. It's an order," that was what he said. We were in the middle of war and the next day will be our biggest attack. And he passed by me. It was so slow that I could even feel each moments passing by. How he started to move his right foot forward and how his right hand almost touched mine but missed. Like how it was to hesitate. We did not touch but something inside, which is stronger, did. Only hearts can feel it.
In front of our hideout, a club named "Carpe Diem", I saw how ironic the situation was. Unlike the real meaning which was to enjoy each moments, that was a time where we could not do what we wanted, for the sake of our country.
And maybe, just maybe, like how it is in novels, we would get to experience one thing- Reincarnation. That, I think, is the closest thing to fiction. A nirvana. A fairytale.
'In the past, they sacrificed their youth because it was the only thing that they can give to their country. People hide their feelings for a greater cause. Nowadays, people hide their feelings because of pride.'
