Dark is good.

The dark is comforting,

For when you are in the dark, you have got nothing to lose.

Light, on the other hand is scary,

You never know when someone is going to block it out.

And for a second, you are blinded by the darkness,

But then when it settles and your eyes adjust, it’s calm all around.

The dark is a good friend,

For if you ask it to stay, it will heed you.

It will stay with you all the time.

But still you rebel, don’t you?

The illusion called hope keeps trying to pull you into the light,

And even if by hook or by crook you do get to see the light of day,

Life happens and you get shunned back into an even darker hole.

But you don’t give up, do you?

All the fictional optimism in the world makes you believe in a happy ever after.

You create your own bubble of potential happiness and try your best to stay in it.

But the bubble bursts way too often.

The light disappears too fast for you to even comprehend it properly.

But still you hold on, don’t you?

Hanging on the edge of the abyss, your fingers bleeding.

Searching for something to help you pull yourself back up and not fall into the darkness.

So you search for happy memories.

But nostalgia is a dirty liar,

It makes you believe that the past was good.

And so you let go.

You fall.

And outstretched arms welcome you.

And darkness makes you a promise:

It will never let you go, but on one condition.

And so you agree.

Every time a flame flickers into life, you smile and put it out.
