Preface
Recent news of a famous doctor in Delhi operating right leg of patient instead of fractured left leg, prompted me to title my story with this name.
There are other number of hearsay cases where for accumulating ill wealth, some doctors are performing NOT REQUIRED heart surgeries, knee replacement and putting stents in human body.
We have grown in a society where doctors are treated as GOD and believing them blindly we surrender our's and our family bodies to them. But in some cases they treat human bodies as an object for learning and minting money.
I recall an incidence of my early childhood when my father's Rado watch got some defect and stopped functioning. At that time there was no Rado watch dealer/service centre in Gurgaon. One of general watch repair shop owner cum mechanic Ram told my father that he can repair the watch. My father asked Ram:
Do you know how to repair Rado watch and have you you ever corrected any Rado watch?
He innocently replied:
दत्ता साहिब नहीं मैंने आज तक राडो घडी नहीं देखी पर एक बार खोल के कोशिश करूँगा तो हाथ साफ़ तो हो ही जायेगा। (No Mr. Datta sahib, I have never seen any Rado watch before but let me open & try it, at least I will know what this watch is and I will learn to repair)
Another childhood incidence is: my father got hold red handed our servant Ramesh, stealing money. He was about to thrash Ramesh, my mother requested not to beat him and said:
हमें पाप को ख़तम करना चाहिए पापी को नहीं। (We should kill the Sin nor the Sinner)
Now a days most of doctors are treating human body as an object for trying to learn without bothering for human life (हाथ साफ़ हो तो हो ही जायेगा). Secondly may be these doctors are not killing the disease but killing humans itself due to negligence (बीमार को ही ख़तम कर दो बीमारी अपने आप ही ख़तम हो जाएगी। Just tike an old politician is said for removing Poor, when she could not erase poverty.
Now-a-days most of doctors are not treating patients to get rid of diseases rather treating diseases to be prolonged for making patient the milky cow.
Story
It was still dark, 'Lord Sun' still enjoying the winter in the new branded blanket gifted by his wife 'Saranyu'.He did not start his duty of declaring the start of day on Mother Earth. Cock(Rooster) was still waiting to see the first rays of Sun for CROWING.
Bird named 'Sweetie' was getting ready to go for flying exercise to keep herself fit & fine, because yesterday evening her Male Bird living partner had given her enough Taunts for her gaining weight.
Bird Sweetie was also worried to get the organic food for her newly born infant after her flying exercise. Last time she fed her earlier infant the polluted synthetic food seeds, which resulted into the tragic death of last infant bird.
It was 4.20 am, Nagraj was in sound sleep & suddenly he felt a little pain in his left arm, which prompted him to get out of the bed. He went to the loo and started feeling little uncomfortable in the chest.
He thought it may be because he had a late heavy dinner. Usually after two drinks Nagraj & family finish the dinner by 9.30 PM except weekends. Yesterday his flight from Mumbai landed late and he could finish his dinner by 11.30 PM.
While coming back to bed in half asleep mode, he pushed the water glass placed on side table. Due to which his wife Nanda got up and started asking series of questions as usual, what happened, why are you wake up so early, daily you get up around at 7 AM, are you fine, did you have extra drinks yesterday, do you have work stress, did you sleep or not etc. etc.????
No body on this earth is competent enough to reply to one question of wife straight because the answer has to be exactly as per her wish otherwise all answers end in to debates. Everyone knows that who wins debate in husband wife conversation.Here there were N number of questions and Nagraj knew if he missed even the serial of questions, it would not satisfy Nanda.
By this series of questions Nagraj lost his interest for sleep and his interest started shifted towards his beautiful wife and her excited charming face & body. He knew from his heart that he is going to get a complete NO to his early naughty demands. Nagraj tried to use his little comfortless as catalyst to achieve his desires and enjoy the empty stomach exercise.
He tried to explain that it was nothing, he just felt uneasy in his chest and got up due to that, with naughty mind he put his left arm at the back of Nanda's shoulder. Simultaneously his subconscious mind was working to fulfill his Master’s planned target. As he put his arm around Nanda, she got little shaky, which hit his arm backward, he felt little pain and screamed Ohh.
Which prompted Nanda to conclude, see you are feeling uneasy in the chest and having a pain in the left arm too, which is a very serious symptom. I am sure you had some heart stroke so let us not take it lightly and side by side she picked up her phone and Speed Dialed 1. Speed dial 1 was the cell number of Mukesh, the brother of Nanda & a heavy drunker, who used to sleep daily after 1 AM and to get up only after 10 AM.
Mukesh was in the mid of nice wet dreams getting cozy with his secretary, picked up his mobile.
Nanda started as a hurricane and in weeping tone said about lot of chest & arm pain faced by Nagraj. Mukesh wanted to go back to his dreams and in half sleep said do not take chances and rush Nagraj to Vedanta Hospital in Gurgaon.
On the other hand Nagraj tried to convince Nanda and repeatedly said he is fine and the pain was not so severe that it could result in to a stroke. But all in vain as ultimately the Boss is always right. Nanda woke up his son Shamraj and drove Nagraj to Vedanta in Gurgaon.
It took them hardly 20 minutes from Anand Niketan and by 5.20 AM they were in the Hospital. Hospital staff greeted them with smile on their faces. The smiles were not for courtesy welcome but because staff would be able to achieve their target sales and it was a good opening day for them a Heart Patient just at the Dawn of the day, is a good sign for growth.
Hospital staff was very fast in shifting Nagraj to the Emergency room and after completion of all tests and formalities, shifted Nagraj to the Suite because the Emergency ward was getting full and they were short of space.
Everything was happening at fast pace mechanically. Nagraj was the only person, who was still not able to know what is happening. He was just looking after beautiful nurses & attendants coming one by one, some one taking his blood, some one putting dip in his arm, some one giving injections. In all this time the way everyone was attending and putting needles in his body, he started feeling pain & feeling sick by default.
Doctors kept on coming for investigation( To add the visiting fees in the medical bill). Forget about the planned early morning empty stomach shift of Nagraj with Nanda, he was not even able to sleep. Even after seeing beauty all around him, he was not able to concentrate on them and fantasy about them.
In the mean time the Doctors & Marketing professional collected all the information about life style of Nagraj and obviously the paying capacity of the family. Nanda at her best gave all basic information that Nagraj is regular Drinker, likes Red Mutton, wealthy life styles, regular weekend party goers, work alcoholic etc. After analyzing all data given by Nanda , Senior Doctor was informed that he should come ASAP as there is an admission of good client with a deep pockets.
As usual the summary of appraisal report of all medical tests, financial, family back ground with Nagraj life style was placed on the table of Senior Doctor Preshan. Generally Dr. Preshan do not take regular cases due to his busy schedule & more importantly all patients could not afford his medical fees.
Dr. Preshan came around 9 AM and checked all reports and could easily find that it was a mere case of Gastric Pain and there was no stroke at all. Nagraj could be well treated for Gas problems and could be released in a day. But professionally it was really wrong, reasons being Dr. Preshan had to rush early, there were the hard work and cost involved for whole of the medical & professional team. Above all Dr. Preshan being the Managing Director was responsible for running this big organization of Vedanta. He has his responsibility towards Venture Capitalist(VC) too. In next six months Vedanta had to come out the IPO as committed to VC.
MD Preshan visited Nagraj, first of all he appreciated the efforts of Nanda as she brought Nagraj just well in time and told Nagraj that he is blessed that he has got such an intelligent caring smart wife. Preshan explained that it was a mild heart stroke, which would have been major attack by 6 AM or so but due to all the best efforts of Nanda he reached Hospital in time.
By that time Mukesh and Premraj brother of Nagraj also reached the Hospital. Preshan advised for immediate angiography test. Without any second thought Nanda gave a consent for that because now Nanda was feeling more confident after the appreciation of Preshan showered on her.
Nagraj was shifted in angiography room, he was still not able to judge the pain he felt in the early hours. Son Shamraj was busy in depositing cash at the cash counters. Shamraj now realized that why the cash counters of hospitals are 24x7 whereas all departments and OPD work under time frames.
At 11.30 AM the angiography was over, still the needles for test were in the body of Nagraj. Preshan called Nanda, Mukesh & Premraj in to the room & showed them the monitor with some color photographs report of shown as Nagraj Arteries. Preshan explained them and with a pointer on monitor screen some dark areas stating to be more than 90% blockage of Arteries.
Nanda & Mukesh from their heart knew that they were not able to conclude that was the blockage more than 90% BUT how could they not believe the words of such a world renowned senior heart surgeon. Basically mostly in India one treat Doctors as the GOD and the Judges as Me Lord.
Premraj brother of Nagraj requested Preshan about the plan now and why are they keeping Nagraj still under needles. Preshan said see you have to take a call for implanting a STENT in one of the artery of Nagraj. Premraj requested Doctor that they would like to have a second opinion and would like to decide it after a week or so. He explained that their family is not having any heart problems history and all their forefathers, as known to them had a minimum life of 85 , so he insisted for a second opinion and requested to please remove the needles from his brother body.
Managing Director, Preshan knew well to handle the HNI clients, he shifted his focus towards Nanda and said it is a crucial decision, the delay can cause fatality. Currently Nagraj is also on with all needles, better to get it now to save further pains to Nagraj. After saying all this Preshan left and said whatever is your decision inform to his junior in 15 minutes as he has to attend some other patient.
Preshan had put the spark on fire bushes and marathon of emotions started among family members. Premraj was of the strict opinion to have a second opinion, not to take any decision in haste. He also informed that reputation for Vedanta and other Hospitals is not good about all this, they have become more of money minded institutes.
Shamraj the son of Nagraj also came back after depositing cash in Hospital with newspaper The Times of India in his hand. Mukesh, brother in law of Nagraj, who had a fixed outing date with his secretary, was in haste. His mind was more involved in how he would enjoy the night with his secretary. He gave his concluding statement: We should go for immediate Implantation of STENT for Nagraj and should not bother about the payment involved as it is the matter of the life of his dearest brother in law.
Nagraj still lying on the bed with the pain of needles unattended by any of the family, as all were busy in taking decision. He was still wondering what has happened so fast, how could he had heart stroke etc.
Shamraj showed the head lines of the Newspaper that 44% of the surgeries done are not at all required.
Now Mukesh felt offended and to prove his opinion right started quoting examples that how his business friend got a major heart attack, expired within two days of first attack and giving other fearful examples of middle age deaths due to heart attack etc. (It is rightly said that half knowledge is always harmful)
Nanda got now totally confused; she was a loving & caring wife but was not able to take a clear stand. The assistant of Preshan, a MBA jumped into the conversation and suggested with confidence not to take chances and rush for STENT Implantation. Ultimately the family agreed to go for STENT Implantation.
It was the time for business team to en cash the client as per their best expertise. Two professionals came in and said that which STENT, they would like to buy i.e Indian or Imported. Being Indian Mindset obviously family agreed for imported.
Now there was an offer for Made in China or Made in Germany. Definitely the choice was Germany. Recently in the neighborhood of Nagraj, Chinese wife of Banta singh expired after three years of marriage. Santa consoled Banta by saying you are lucky dear your wife being Chinese lived such a long period of three years, otherwise Chinese products have a very short life(चीनी थी और इस से ज़्यादा क्या चलती) So the Germany Made STENT was finalized.
Now again the offer came of two brands one was triple the value of other make, so the costliest one was selected. Not to repeat again during all these presentations for selling Stent, Nagraj was still on Bed. STENT was finally implanted at 02.10 PM
To cut short, family & friends started coming in. They were all greeted in the long food area where all branded restaurants were available. Everyone came and enquired about the expenditure done and praised that they had took a right decision for opting for the costliest STENT. Some of them even gave them their opinions about the Doctor, brand of STENT trying to prove that they have got full knowledge of any subjects.Half filled vessels always make more noise.
Life of Nagraj got changed; he could go to his office in USA only after Dr. recommendation after three weeks. During his US trip he again felt little pain in chest and rushed to the Best Hospital in Los Angeles.
After all tests and reports Doctor concluded: The artery implanted with STENT was not even 70% blocked rather by implanting the STENT the function of heart is affected.THERE WAS NO HEART STROKE AT 4.20 AM on that day , a SMALL HEART STROKE DO OCCURRED between 11.30 AM to 12 NOON during the Time when Nagraj had to wait with needles in his body on the angiography bed.
Are Doctors Saviors OR .........?
Got Inspired to write this story after reading the Front Page news of The Times of India, New Delhi Edition that 55% of CARDIAC OPERATIONS NOT NEEDED.
